Harrison CANScan Problems

The software for the Harrison CANScan is giving me a giant hassle. I've tried it on two different laptops both running Windows XP.

What happens the majority of the time is I plug in the OBD-II into the car the USB into the laptop. When connecting via the USB port the red status bar changes to green and reads "Vehicle Connected". But when I choose the power train data option it changes to green and "ECU Connected" but the number above the text boxes reads all accented 'o' characters.

I'm leaving out the myriad of ways I've crashed the software too. I've tried the 3.60 and latest software both but it does the same every time. This is annoying because I have six years of school and two degrees in computer science and I just want to crack open the source code. Has anyone ran into and/or solved this problem?

Did you try contacting Dan Harrison about it?

Not yet. This is my first step. If I can't find a fairly quick answer then I'll move on to Mr. Harrison.
