Thumbs down Grinding trying to go into reverse..

2004 6speed, 91k miles. After making my trip to work, I decided to go to sonic, got my grub, tried to reverse out, and it kept poping out of reverse and grinding. All my foward gears are fine. Think it could be a synco??? Let me know somthing guys. (no leaks) no signs of leakage on the trans. nor the rear end.

I'm about to change my trans and diff fluid.

It's a common problem for quite a few of us...That will happen once in a while...I had the same question and received the same reply I'm giving you...I wouldn't worry about it.

I thought you meant it was grinding once when you tried it...Well then yes...There's obviously something wrong that I can't answer for you...go to a dealership.

Change your transmission fluid first then we'll go from there...

Yeah, I'll change it Wednesday and let it work itself through and let you guys know how it goes.

I could be wrong but I think reverse doesn't have a synchronizer..So I'm wondering if its not the fluid I hope it something simple like a bushing or shift linkage...idk I'm lost when it comes to transmissions..

i've got the same problem it seems....i put it in reverse and ease out the clutch instead of moving it just grinds away...to get reverse i really have to jam it down and even then sometimes it happens...only thing that worries me is my car is an 07 with low miles(40k) and hasn't been driven hard. from what i have read most of these problems occurred in 04's and 05's. What do you guys think?

check out the clutch pedal, it might not be full disengaging.

Okay, I havne't changed out my fluid yet, but It did dawn on me today, ever sense I've had the car at 79k miles, you could tell the throwout bearing was worn out, because when you let off the clutch you could hear the worn throwout bearing noises. I just randomly ran into a good friend of mine that I hardly get to talk to, I told him the symptoms I was having and he said it sounds like my throwout bearing is causing that to happen. He said sometimes not all your gears are effected by a throwout bearing, so having the reverse only messing up seems logical...

So, I could use a new clutch anyway. So I'm most likly going to order a clutch and flywheel kit. Those are just my thoughts about it so far.

my new S2 makes this very quite grinding sound when in neutral and clutch out. its normal.
but its hard to say we need to hear it to decide.

Your clutch is not disengaging completely and is dragging. This could be due to a bad pedal assembly (they fatigue and break), a tired clutch master cylinder, broken pressure plate fingers, or a bad pilot bearing. Transmission fluid has nothing to due with this symptom.

Reverse has no synchronizer, so is more sensitive to a dragging clutch.

Follow this advice. At 91000mi your clutch may just be worn out.
A quick search will reveal that it's common for a throwout bearing to make noise. Nothing to worry about unless you're one unlucky case, hard to tell without a soundclip.
Changing the fluid may be long overdue but since you probably have to change the clutch you have to do it anyway.

I see I see. Well guys I really do appreciate your ideas on it. The clutch is infact getting weak. No slipage but weaker for sure.

I'll just put a new clutch in it, but before that I will check the clutch assembly and also check the master cylinder.

I'll be in touch to let you guys know how it goes.

Have an update. Had my good badass mechanic friend come by the house to take a look at it. He couldn't exactly tell what the grinding noise was coming from but we did notice, if you slam it hard into reverse it clicks the 2ed click and goes into gear, as long as you hold it down hard. We also discovered the master is leaking slightly, my fluid was slightly lower than max as well. So we believe its my master not creating enough pressure due to the leak to fully disengage the clutch causing it to grind and have trouble going into reverse/gears...SO, ill be ordering a new master and see what happens.

If you keep slamming it into reverse without the clutch fully disengaging, you'll be ordering more than a clutch master cylinder...

Well, its not as harsh as I explained it, I didn't plan on using reverse anyway until I replaced the master.
