Gas Mileage and hard idle

Gas Mileage and hard idle
Hey all,
Not to technical when it comes to car problems, so I thought I'd ask for some advice.
Recently my 8 has been getting horrible gas mileage (used to be 18mpg and not I'm hitting somewhere around 14.8mpg) along side the issue of a hard idle. The hard idle only seems to happen when my car is hot.
Like I said, I'm not too technical, but might this be a result of a broken cat.? It seems like my car is a lot louder than it usually has been in the past.
Any theories welcome...
