hey guys.
today i ventured to the pump (favorite BP station), & i started pumpin 93. i was on empty, so i expected it to take a couple minutes, when all the sudden the pump stopped, as if my tank was full....but i had only put about 3.5 or so gallons in. I was confused, & i tried to keep pumpin, but it would just keep stoppin, so i gave up. the ca drove fine before, & as far as i can tell, its drivin fine now, so im not too worried about. i hope it was just the pump, but could there be a bigger problem behind it???

Yes, your fuel tank is plastic. It could have melted at the top and reduced your tank capacity. Has happened before.
Have you revved the car FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD while it was stationary recently?
Otherwise, you may have a gauge or sender problem.......which is more likely.

i really havent driven the car hard at all........& i definitely dont rev it while stationary, at least not in neutral....
so hopefully its just a gauge or sender problem, as u said, but better yet, maybe it was just a goofy pump. thanks though....im gonna have the dealer check it out tomorrow, cuz ive gotta go over there anyway. i appreciate it gomez.

Two possibilities IMO: The nozzle shutoff sensor is not set correctly--had that happen before. Try another gas pump. Or, the rollover flapper in the filler tube is stuck partly closed and bouncing the gas back into the nozzle shutoff sensor. (The flapper I refer to is not the one you can see when looking down into the filler tube. It's lower in the tube and is intended to stop the gas from flowing out in the event of a rollover.)
the gas tank is suppose to be 15.9 gal. how many of you have been able to achieve that from empty. not me, i can only get 14 gal before it cuts off. then i have to pump very slow to get about another gal. into it maybe. i say say design problem. try it some time and you'll see...

if that is the case then i would say there is still a design flaw. if i were to run out of gas and still had almost two gal's of gas left, thats not being picked up. i would say that is way too much to fall into the "approximate" catagory. the design of the gas inlet just will not let you fill up to where it should be, and this does not mean topping off either...

guys, i pumped gas fine today. i usually get gas fairly soon after the warning light comes on, & filling takes about 12.5 gallons even with that extra few handle squeezes, so i think mazda was a bit conservative with the early 'low fuel' light, which is fine IMO. when i filled before, the gauge in the car was still accurate, i just couldnt get the damn thing to pump. i believe that, as BRealistic & Go48 said, the pressure cuttoff was low, or the fuel cutoff flap mechanism in the car was the problem. thanks guys.
what is this get a life stuff i posted something that has happened to me. and you get offended talk about get alife.. also i stated a posiible design flaw. seems to me all want to do is discount other people and take glory for yourself. well its all yours i'm out of this thread
