Yeah I just started having hard starts one day and I had a brand new S2 starter, new plugs, new battery, and freshly compression tested engine so it didn't take long to diagnose thanks to me having a fuel pressure gauge.
This video is before I found the lea. I smelled no fuel oddly, must be the years of inhaling uncatted rotary fumes.

Dude, I replaced the entire line with a brand new one before realizing the nipple looked slightly warped. But at least I replaced a 10 year old fuel line so it was all good in the end

My RX8 was smelling like gas. I noticed it was leaking slowly under the car so I took out the back seat exposing the cover to enter the fuel pump. When I took it off I noticed there was gas all over the top of the tank. After examining it closely I noticed that it was leaking when I turned on the ignition where you attach the fuel line to the nipple of the fuel pump. I think the little O ring is not on it. I think the previous owner was doing somethnig with the pump and took of the line and didnt put back on the o ring. I went to the dealer and he said i would have to buy the whole fuel line! I wanted to disconnect the line to see if the o ring was there but I dont know how to take it off.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINE FROM THE FUEL PUMP? ALSO DOES THAT GREEN CLAMP LOOK BROKEN?

I have the same thing going on... Trying to figure out what my sudden running like crap with misfire codes. My buddy and I pulled off the fuel line connector at the pump to see if there was any pressure, and no matter how we put it back on it leaks... Does this mean I have to buy a whole new $80 fuel line?? I know the white plastic elbow on the top of the pump housing doesn't have any hairline cracks; I held my finger tip on the hole with the line off and was holding the fuel pressure with my finger... NO leaks there. Can I just replace the O ring? Does that little red ring come out where I can replace the o ring?

Mind sharing the info on the o-ring part number/material type and where to get it from? Is it Nylon or Viton type?
Being foolish, I thought it would be a good idea to take out the original fuel pump for R&R on the 120k mile RX-8, with cylinder 1 misfire after redlining. Well, it didn't leak one drop initially after putting everything back and starting normally. So a few days went by and drove the car and now have gas leaking from the green retainer clip area at a rate of about a drop a second.
A few observations/questions?
1. I push the blue cage spacer into the fuel connector line opening, and assembled the green retainer clip with opening facing the driver side. I noticed the green retainer clip has square edge on right for both top & bottom (bird-eye view), so it's sitting flush in the recessed holes on the connector.
2. Push the line back onto pump nipple/outlet until no more, open the retainer clip slightly, and push some more until stopped.
Do above steps sound right?
3. I felt my finger tip around the pump nipple/outlet without noticing any crack. To properly test without removing the whole pump assembly again, should I have an assistant try starting the engine or just turning on ignition without starting, while I block the tip of the nipple with my finger to test for nipple leakage?
4. If so far so good, next step is to replace the o-ring as you did by fishing it out with a pick, any other suggestions?

That part of the fuel pump commonly breaks. Specially for us with a 2004. I replaced mine last year and the crack progressively worsen to a point that I a full tank would only last me 75 miles. I would just replace the assembly if you can find a donor. I tried replacing the O-ring and it did not work because the crack extended outside of the clip. You can view my YouTube clip below to see if yours is similar to mine.

My 04 started giving me this same problem, hairline fracture on the male connector. Has anyone found a better fix for this than getting a whole new assembly? that im sure it will break again in the same manner undoubtedly. It would be great if i could just find the top part. Freaking Ridiculous that this part wears out like this.

I did try out the finger blocking fuel outlet nipple test while ignition switched to "ON" position, and no leakage as far as drop goes. The fuel pressure definitely took me by surprise, which started spraying since I didn't apply enough pressure initially.
So I can only presume that the plastic elbow connector is the culprit, not the outlet nipple. Looking inside the connector, there are the light blue spacer cage, red hard plastic insert, and teal o-ring of some sort. Did you use a pick to remove & replace the teal o-ring?

Yes I did to see if it would fix my leak, but it still didn't. You still have to consider that it's a small fracture at the plastic elbow pipe. Just imagine how that piece hits the cover that you remove to access the fuel pump.
That's what I think broke mine, because I had a full size adult(like 250-270 lbs) sit behind me the night before and we hit a couple bums on out way to a friend's house. His weight probably and the constant motion of the car caused the put pressure on the elbow pipe. Which initially started as a small hairline fracture with a few unnoticeable drops, but enough to fill the cabin with fumes of fuel, until it gradually became a larger crack weeks later.
