There simply isn't any time on the weekends.

Sounds like a conspiracy to keep us from playing with the seals while the engine is
assembled!

I can see it now "Put down that side seal before you put an eye out!" "Alright who took the vaseline!"

And on the second radiator pic, you need a big arrow and a label!

I don't need any advice Phil. I know exactly what I'm not doing.

olddragger 08-12-2008 08:09 PM

removing the restrictor pill will not hurt the flow--it is there only to reduce "sounds" that can occur in the heater system when the water in the heater system is moving faster. the heater will still have the capacity to warm us well in the areas we live in.
I just offered a suggestion with something that has worked well with me. if it is not something you can use--ok then.

Well the operation is supposed to begin on Monday 8/21/08. I am really missing my 8 and am hoping for it's quick return to me. Ray tells me that he should have everything completed in 7-10 days. I don't know if they are going to video the event or not. I have asked Ray to post his progress and findings in this thread.

I just reread the post from OldDragger and I hope he did not take my jab at Taj as refering to him. I value input from him and everyone else.

Ray: glad to hear you're finally moving in! Can't wait to see updates on Phil's car.
I'm curious to hear what you find in there.

I have a couple sources to shop for prices on OEM engine parts. While waiting for the parts to arrive we will begin the removal/rebuild process. Once the parts arrive we should, and I emphasize should, be able to get the car all done in 7-10 days. However, we can also expect a number of snags along the way. I know BHR has certainly had it's share lately.

As far as reporting things as we go along and livestreaming any video, I am not yet sure how good of a job I will be able to do with either one as I foresee 16 hour days just like I did in Tampa with mysql's engine. As such, I doubt I will have much energy to post at night. I'll give it my best effort, though.

I am not putting any time frame for the car to be done except for wanting it back for Seven Stock. That should give Ray plenty of time to overcome all snags.

I think the problem may simply be related to his right foot!:lol2:.

I steadfastly refuse to remove my right foot.:boid: It has to be a defect in the engine:uhh:. I mean 117 degrees F air temp is common with the people I run with:).

are you saying they were out of spec from the factory or had worn out ?

Phil's 8 08-25-2008 11:23 PM

Well I finally got stopped for the night and parked the motorhome. I came here looking for news on my 8 and don't find any. Ether Ray is still working on it or did not get a chance to get started. I only have a couple of days left on my vacation.

Easy_E1 08-26-2008 02:39 AM

Let me at it! Have die grinder will travel. Carbide is my friend.

Jedi54 08-26-2008 01:52 PM

I want to see this beast ROAR at SevenStock.

DOMINION 08-27-2008 03:50 AM

Your not the only one. All of Phils friends here in Vegas want to see the samething :)

Marietta 8 08-30-2008 06:50 AM

The restrictor is in place to prevent gurgling noise inside the cockpit.

You don't want to do this.

Unless you intend to use the HVAC system as an additional cooling circuit, taking the restrictor pill out will just result in less cooling efficiency because you are reducing the flow through the rad.

Phil's 8 08-30-2008 11:36 AM

I'm kinda hoping that they get started this weekend. If he gets into his house he should get started.

Its not cheating! It corrects the weight balance.

olddragger 09-01-2008 10:05 AM

there are other areas available, depending on one's mods. IMHO this and a lower thermostat some be done 1st!!
the position of our radiator etc does allow full advantage on a radiator upgrade. it sure helps but you will still need the 2nd one. take my word(and others) for this.:)

I have a gurgling noise and mine is stock. No super human hearing necesary, its quite audible.

olddragger 09-01-2008 10:08 PM

no issues i am aware of--i never knew that he didnt upgrade his water pump. one is on order.
his is running a little hotter on the road than he would like. he also has the rb cAI on. I know that causes a swirl affect for the top 1/3 of the radiator.
we can never have one run too cool:)
on a low 90's day in Ga on the road mine is in the 170's--it is never(so far) over 195! That is with hard driving. Normal in town temps with a/c is about 180-185.So far so good.

September 8 is when the car will start to be disassembled. I am ordering the engine parts now. The car will easily be done in time and delivered back to Vegas in time for SSXI. I have but one car I am working on right now and Phil's is it. The car will have a comprehensive rebuild done, new gauges installed, all new fluids, and any other problems that are discovered along the way will also be addressed. I plan on putting in 16-18 hour days once I get started and Erick and Jeff will help me as much as they can.

Phil is also seeing to it that he brings out the same militant attitude in me that helped me to make it to AZ in 30 days once I got off my ass with regard to the move. The car stuff will be a cinch by comparison.

OK, the whole story will commence tomorrow.

Phil's 8 09-08-2008 06:44 AM

I'ts been awfull quiet......Is the project going to start today?

Jedi54 09-08-2008 11:41 AM

I talked to Ray yesterday and he's in his new house! I would imagine that means the rebuild will start shortly.

We'll have definitive proof when Ray does NOT post here all day. (meaning he's hard at work on the car)

Phil's 8 09-09-2008 12:16 PM

It's started (I think). I was informed that pulling the engine of an AT is a bear so I figure it's started. I guess just having moved into the new house that his internet is not working yet so I would imagine that news will be limited.

Delmeister 09-09-2008 01:51 PM

If extra cooling (upgraded waterpump and rad, spraying water on rad) doesn't reduce temperatures, it sounds like the thermostat. Have you tried removing it completely?

Yup, no workie that way. See over heating thread for that discussion.https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/overheating-148711/page18/. You'll have to thumb thru the thread but it's there.

Phil's 8 09-10-2008 01:51 PM

I'm not sure what to think. Jeff and Erick were going to video the whole rebuild and put it out on the net. Ray was being professional and saying that he might be too busy to post much. I'm trying to figure if no news is good news or my 8 self destructed. I was expecting at a minimum a f/u from Ray once in a while.

Jedi54 09-10-2008 01:55 PM

I don't think Ray has internet at the new place. Have you tried calling him?

Phil's 8 09-10-2008 02:03 PM

Not yet, but if I don't hear anything by 3 I guess I will call. I'm not really worried just looking for updates and the usual insults.:)

It's one of those months that everyone has. He moved into his new house and found that it is going to be a while getting hooked up for internet. On top of that, his computer crashed and he needs a new motherboard. Work is progressing.

olddragger 09-17-2008 09:39 PM

any news Phil?

Phil's 8 09-18-2008 06:40 AM

Ray's computer took a dump so he is not posting. All I know is that the engine got pulled. I am expecting the car back completed on Monday. If it's not back then I may not make SS...

No real update - Murphy moved in with Ray and as a result my 8 is suffering. Here I go off to SS in my PU truck or Jeep.

Well that just sucks for Phil, but on the positive side of things, looks like it worked out for the better.
