When it's that cold, the idle will be a little rough for a few minutes maybe that's the "shake" you speak of. As far as burning smell, the only thing I can think of is that the car runs really rich @start up and maybe you're smelling something associated with that. Just a guess. If someone a little more mechanically inclined than I wants to chime in, have at it

I noticed the car spells more than normal when warming up in cold weather. I kind of attributed the smell to the oil being burned with the gas. Shaking I never noticed, but it does rev a bit higher until it warms up.

No Start, start, then check engine light
On Sunday, the day after NY was hammered with a foot of snow, I went out to start my car and it wouldn't start. I kept trying, and trying, and trying. It finally began to "catch" and then started. For the first 5-10 seconds, it sounded like there were rocks in the engine. It stabilized but the check engine light remaind on. I made an appointment to get it checked but today, the check engine light went out. Has this happened to anyone? Any ideas as to what coudl have been the problem. The car has been running fine since the rocks in the engine sounds went away.
Thanks,
Jeff
