ESS (NVRAM) will not reset, why?

Good day all. Perhaps this is a bad place to place this question and if so please fell free to move it to where ever it does go.

So I was doing the ESS clean. I found it and pulled it with a 10mm. It was filthy. I sprayed with carb cleaner. wiped down very well. I also looked up at the U area that holds the thing and sprayed carb cleaner on that area and wiped down too. all nice and clean. I put it back.

I cleaned the Mass Air Flow ( MAF ) sensor and the two metal screens too. Put it all back together. Climbed in to do the ESS reset. Pressed brake down and held. Turned key past ACC to ON and pumped 20-45 times. the oil gauge never moved but after the first 3 second it went up just a mm or two, but that is where it should be normally before starting as I see it.

I tried many different times and I could not get it to reset for anything. reasons?

also, I plan on changing the ignition coils, plugs, and wires. Local coils are 31.99-75.00 depending.

What are your thoughts on buying them online? Cheaper anywhere else? the links I have seen on here for such shows about 60 per and the other is a dead link.

Thanks for all your help!

You have to do the stomp quickly (20× in 8 sec, I believe?). Also, you have to have an update to your ecu (can't recall which, off the top of my head. Look it up) in order for the oil gauge to sweep. Verify that you have the update.

I do apologize. This is a 2004 Mazda RX 8 series 1. It is also a 6 speed so there should be no neutral safety issue that I know of. I have not been to a dealership in years since they changed the engine, to be honest. One of the worst experiences I ever had so I just stopped going to them and never went to the other local dealership.

Has about 110K on it. not driven in the last 9-10 years.

Hope that helps.

What prey tell is an ECU? I have not come across that one yet. So many abbreviations that mean nothing to me. I don't mean to be rude. I have searched for many things on the site and not found anything but the abbreviations.

I am fine if you choose not to answer, I will eventually find the answer or some other person will be kind enough to let me know. I apologize if I have offended with my lack of knowledge.

The stock computer that runs the car is the ECU ...engine control unit

The ESS reset sweep was something that came about in an update that Mazda did to the ECU in late 2004 I think. It is possible that if you have a really old ECU flash that it still has the super old flash that doesn't do the sweep.

Thanks! An engine control unit is an ECU! That makes sense. I did find via google but even they were called ECU, I stayed confused. I do believe I got that update but I am not sure. I am about to go out and try to hit the brake 20 times in 8 seconds, but the vids I found took longer, yet I will try anything in order to do this correctly. In the meantime, I am gaining great knowledge and learning so much from the many threads here, thanks.

Quick edit*** Guess I need to go to a dealership and have it flashed or something. I did the 20 in 8 and nothing.
