Engine Rattle between 3k and 4k rpms

I have a 05 RX8 Manual, during slight acceleration I can hear a faint rattle in the engine between 3k and 4k rpms. I dont think this is the marbles in a can problem, it sounds more like valves knocking. I know the rotary doesnt have valves per say, but I had a honda accord with 300k miles on it with rattling valves and the sounds are very similar. It sounds as if two washers are loose and clanging against one another. After reaching 4k rpm the sound goes away. This happens thru all the gears but much more noticable in 1st thru 4th. Its very faint unless Im driving next to a divider or wall where the sound can bounce back and I can hear it at low speeds. Going to take it to the dealer, just thought I might be able to get some insight on what I could be hearing before presenting the problem to the tech. Last thing I want is a no problem found answer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Check out this thread for rattling noise. Time for a compression check.

did you find out what the problem was doc? I'm hearing something similar, the engine almost sounds like a diesel (the sound is very faint as well) altho my rev range seems to be 2.5 to 3.5k rpms

So I took it in to the dealership and after just a few minutes the guy told me that the engine is most likely pinging, to not worry too much about it and use up the gas and then put premium in it.

Use premium in it, if it does it again call your dealer service dept up and tell them you will come in next time it does it and bring it in HOT so they can do a baro/compression test on it. You will be happy and the tech will be happy.

Take a look at this. If you don't feel any power loss when the noise occurs this is most likely what you're hearing.
