Yes - measure the voltage across the battery terminals. Should be 13.5 to 14.5 volts, more or less, with the car running.
If you turn the car off, then leave the headlights on for a half hour or so, a good battery should still be over 12 volts (not running). Don't try that test unless you're prepared with a jump or a starter in case it flunks.

well i checked the voltage on my battery and first i did it with the car off and it read about 10.94 then i turned on the car and it read 13.97 does this mean anything????
With 13.94 running your Alternator is working ok. Battery voltage not good. Bad Cell. Replace battery. You said it was a year old? You should get a good prorate on the new one. Take it in to where you purchased and ask them to test it.

^....................yep. I'm just confirming the obvious.
Typically I like to see the alternator read about 14.1 to 14.2, but that could have been caused by the meter being used, or poor contact with the meter.
What type(brand) of battery did you have in there and what is either the model number or CCA(cold cranking amps) number?

13.97 sounds a little low for charging voltage and could explain the 10.94 volt battery reading. I would have the battery charged and load tested. It that takes care of the battery, have the charging system tested after you check the alternator belt tension, charging voltage should be 14.25 volts.
