This, I would love to do but my no.1 mechanic seems to think that I'd need an after market ecu??? Cause the o2 sensor would get wrong readings? If I could do it easily and cheaply I'd be keen as but again, I'm an old car chick and know -zilch- about computers and any of that kind of crap so I don't really want to fiddle with things I don't know about.
Any info I can get would be greatly appreciated, cause I'd rather not try and haggle with the dealer if I can whip it up myself. That and the fact that I think I might die if I have to drive the skyline any more there's no snot!

AAAAAAAnd for the snide remarks about my island... yeah sometimes I wish I lived in japan

NZ is great

Your mechanic knows nothing about the RX-8's. The 02 sensor post cat measures heat only, yes you will trigger an 02 fault but since that sensor does jack **** it doesn't matter. 70% of the members on here have a cat delete or have gutted their cat. The only 02 sensor that matters is pre-cat and is attached to the header.

Ok, did a quick peek into some threads. Seems my only issue will be a CEL? So the engine light will just stay on, but no adverse effect to the car? Spoke to my mechanic, he's not keen on the idea. Along the lines of 'yeah and what happens if you actually get a CEL but don't recognise it cause the lights always on?' (A good point I guess) also, I thought, if I have any further mech issues, this will void what puny warranty I have, would it not? NZ doesn't have emissions standard yet though and if it doesn't actually effect the car? I don't know, I just want the damn thing on the road. I'm also risking a very knobbish affect of having a loud exhaust on an auto the car already has an aftermarket exhaust and is pretty roudy.... hmmmmmm.... whats a few more stares???

Any other Cel you would have will either flash (misfire), or you will feel the car fall on its face.

ultimately its your call, a new cat from Mazda is in the $800 usd range. If I'm not mistaken.

buy a ScangaugeII from ebay or something. It will read and clear CELs for you, as well as give you other gauge readouts. When the p0420 cel comes up (i think thats the cat delete cel) every few hundred miles, just clear it with the scangaugeII. Its cheap, it reads CELs, and does other neat things too. I use one.

I say gut it - then see where you are at - unless of course someone else is paying for a new one for you .

Gaahh this has taken a long time to sort. So after a mish-mash of events and my mechanic getting on the blower to the dealer, the beastie got picked up last week to get repaired. Picking her up tonight. I'll take it in to my mechanic next week to check out the work done and see what the go is but fingers crossed, she'll be all good now... touch wood. God I can't wait to drive it again

UK

Just to try and ease your mind a bit,i bought one with warm start problem...£1000 which i thought no sorry think it was a bargain! Bought a new starter, got compression tested and happy to say nearly 8bar per rotor.Being an 04 model in the UK it still had the original coils and starter! Replaced those and BAM she fired up.I now have a fuel pump problem though,The way i see it i still have £3000 to spend before i get to the point of spending so much it would be deemed as a write off.
Hopefully you don't have low compression but i would start with the cheapest fix and work my way up.
BTW I paid £60 for my 4 GENUINE Mazda coils from ebay,Even took them to Mazda to see if they were in fact genuine which they confirmed they are :-)

Cheers, think I might try this route. So far I've had to do all the legwork for the dealer, so I think I might just cut my losses and fix the f*#@ing thing myself. The cat has infact been replaced (with a second hand one) and still not much improvement. I quickly got a scan tool run over it today and it came back- P0076- intake valve control solenoid, bank 1, circuit low. Thoughts? Cause I have no idea what that is My mechanic suggested starter motor. He thinks I may be expecting too much but if a 75 datsun and a 92 skyline can start on a button, I think an 05 rx8 should be able to do it with a turn of the key as opposed to sitting at a gas station cranking for 20sec+

VDI solenoid? I don't have a manual and I've tried searching for this but nothing has made sense. Should I take the car off the road again??? I was under the impression that this code would have something to do with the ssv but aparently not I don't even know if this has anything to do with my hot starting or wether this is a new problem altogether... 'sigh'

VDI valve is for high rpm operation only - it should be fixed but it isn't anything to do with hot starting issues .

Suggest you look back at the first few posts in this thread and go over the suggestions made by experienced rx8 owners and forget what your mechanic is telling you . BTW . If you had checked out my starter motor speed thread months back you would know if that was it or not .
