dealer forgot to replace dipstick!

This is a new one on me: last week I took the car to my dealer to have the heatshield recall done. Since the car was there anyway, I asked them to change the oil for me (first mistake).

This morning I decided to check the oil level (I do this once a week anyway) and when I popped the hood... NO DIPSTICK IN THE HOLE!

Obviously some idiot at the dealership forgot to replace it.

I've only driven the car about 70 miles since the oil change. Here's my question: could any damage have been done? The oil pressure gauge read normal throughout. I'm going to return the car to the dealer and have him change the oil again anyway, along with a very strongly worded letter of complaint to the service manager.

Thanks for any advice,

66Cooper

PS I'll put a new dipstick in it before I drive it back (or should I insist on a flatbed?)

1.Unless you got some contamination down the dip stick hole -no consequences

2.You do not have an oil gauge---you have an 'idiot gauge'--it only has 2 positions- off and running. You will note that the needle only has theses 2 positions.

3If it were me I would drive back to where you had the oil change as is and ask them to check the oil level.

And I would ask for the guy that actually did the job to check it. Take a picture as he replaces it.

You would have two dipsticks in the same photo...

I would tell dipstick #2 to bend over and look carefully at the dipstick receptacle. Make sure he's getting a real close look and then demonstrate the insertion technique using dipstick #1.

That way he'll remember next time.

this is the reason for my hesitation of letting my dealer work on mine.
