compression test???

hi, i was reading a thread that said when the car wont start after the engine is hot up is due to low compression? my 04 rx8 has this problem. i was wondering around how much does the test cost at the dealer? and if it does have low compression what is there to do about it?

Say around $200 for compression test by dealer as long as they have proper equipment to do this test on a rotary engine. You need to do your homework via many threads on this topic on this board B4 you do anything so you know what to expect and can make sure the dealer does what you want done and gives you back useable information from your $200 investment.

Need more info on your car (like miles, maint records, modifications, etc) to be able to comment further on your "what to do about it" question.

The cost for a compression test, if they are willing to perform it, should be for about the initial hour shop charge.
The car has an extended warranty period on the engine core of 8yrs/80,000 miles. If it does truly have low compression and it is being replaced under warranty, the charge for the test should be billed billed back to Mazda.
Mazda has been requesting oil change records if it does become necessary to change out an engine under warranty.

Special tester, different type of results.

Also, it takes them about 1/2 hour to do it, but they will charge you a full hour, which is reasonable enough I guess. if they try to charge you MORE than an hour's labor, they are seriously trying to dick with you.

hope there is still someone here who can help, i have A/T rx8 2007, it just broke 60k miles. When i first got it i changed the spark plugs and coils. Well just recently in the cold months here in louisiana my car has been getting a little tougher to start on a warm start up which i hear is a sign of low compression, another reason i believe that my engine is suffering from low compression is that its taking it 10+seconds to go from 0-60 and that's the results from my cobb access port. the car still does cold startup just fine and runs like a charm other then the ssv having a small clatter when its warmed up. just would like someone to finalize this before i take action thanks.

Well, it could be compression but it could be lots of other things too.
So don't jump the shark yet.

When is the last time you change plugs and coils?
A clattering SSV isn't a good thing. If the SSV is not opening or staying open due to a vacuum leak that will really impact performance.

You should put that Cobb AP to some good use and post a WOT log and an idle log.

Other things could be a weak battery, corroded terminals, failing starter, etc.

Should maybe consider starting you're own thread.

I got the car with 50k miles and changed the plugs and coils like a month after I got the car. It just broke 60k miles so it hasn't been long at all. As for the clattering ssv it only clatters once the car is warmed up, I can physically move the valve quite easily so i know its not clogged up, its just the solenoid. The battery is pretty weak, the cold months are giving it hell I notice, I put a nice long trickle charge on it over night and brought it to life not long ago. I can put up a WOT log if need be.

a clattering SSV is just due to wear in the idle position, it does not mean the SSV is not functional but just an annoying sound. pulses of the intake charge move the valve slightly, which wears out the stop on the cams.

so in my suspicion of the beginnings of low compression, I took the spark plugs out to see what they looked like. I am pretty sure they aren't supposed to look this color on the leading plug?? my guess is that its running lean and not getting enough oil on the apex seals. Remember I changed the plugs roughly 10k miles ago so I just need someone to tell me if this is normal or not? thanks.
