Cold Idle Issue.. huh

Hey there guys, I am hoping that someone can shed some light on this issue I am having. I am thinking it's related to the catylitic converter, but I am not sure.

I started it up on Friday night just as I was about to leave work and the idle was horrible. The AFR gauge in my car was reading 13.0 at idle. It should be around 15 so it was very rich.

The strange thing though is that after the car warms up, it runs fine. It's just that when it sits for a while or is cold, the idle becomes horrible.

Any ideas?

Just got a call from the dealership. The code that is coming up is a P0301 random misfire so they are going to replace the plugs and coils... Wow.. what research.

I'll let you guys know if that fixes the problem.. We'll see.

Well.. it finally happened. My engine gave up on me but thankfully Mazda NA is going to cover both parts and labor.

They ran a compression test and that came back fine as well as replacing the coils and spark plugs but yet the problem still persisted.

Thankfully the regional manager and district manager were at the dealership at this time so they recommended to the mechanic to take a spark plug out and pressurize the coolant system. Well, that did it. The coolant started coming out of the spark plug hole!!!!

Yup... rear rotor...

He even said that usually when the engine goes bad that the compression test is very telling but they will have to modify their procedures after looking at my car. It required the secondary test as well to determine that the engine was bad.

Just got an update from them. They said that the new engine will be here on Monday and that it should be installed, barring any unforseen issues, by Wednesday...

Pretty fast turnaround!!

Sure hope you get a new engine and not a re-manufactured one.

Hmm. Were you losing coolant, or they just did this on a hunch? Or from looking at the old plugs?....

No I wasnt loosing coolant. The regional and district managers just happened to me on site the same day that my car was there and they recommended to the mechanic to remove a spark plug and pressurize the coolant system.

Luckily they were there or else the diagnosis may still have been continuing to this day.
