cold engine squealing

I have a 04 RX8 with 23,000 miles on it, in the last few days I noticed a squealing or high pitched noise when started first thing in the morning. After my 8 warms up it goes away, I talked to the dealership and they say this is normal, which I find interesting sinse it just started. Any imput from my fellow RX8 ers?

Definitely sounds like a failing water pump. Look for a small leak at the bottom of the water pump (front of the engine). Have the service people keep the car overnight so that they can start the car cold in the morning to hear the sound. They can't tell squat without hearing the sound.

Crazy that they would tell you that without listening to the noise. Seems to be the common response when they don't want to deal with a problem, "oh yeah, that's normal".

I had not thought about a water pump with only 23,000 miles, but the noise it is making sounds like that might be my issue. Thanks for the help.

And your positive it's not the air injection? My car does something like that, it's easily heard even while in the car and only while warming up while it's very cold. I thought it was the air injection though.

Probably the air pump......give it a listen when you first start up your car...should stop after a few minutes regardless.

It's strange, I get that but only randomly. It would happen like every other morning or two...

Unplug the smog pump and see if the squeel goes away one morning. Pretty easy to tell then. You will throw a code, but it will go away after a few drives and having it plugged back in again.

i get the same high pitch sound when starting. not every time but every 2nd or 3rd time. it's only while cranking that this happens and goes away the instant the engine is running. could it be the starter?

Typically - I would go with the serpentine belt as the first culprit.

When my coils were going and my car was cranking quite a bit I got a squeeky sound, only squeeked just as the engine first fired

After I replaced my coils and my car stopped cranking the squeeking sound went away

sure way to find out if it is a belt squeak is to have some belt lube ready when its dead cold. WD40 will work too.
start up the car and wait for the squeak, hit-up the belts, and if the noise goes away then its that particular belt. tighten and check slack with motor off.
done!

and if its not the belts making the high pitched noise, then it may be the air injectors making those noise and its normal.

I am scheduled at the dealership next Tuesday I will keep you informed of the out come. The squealing sound I am having problems with happens after the motor has fired and is running.

I have the same noise when starting cold and goes away after warmup. The sound is a high pitched whine that I have isolated the air pump. May be a bearing noise. Does anyone know the RPM's of the pump? Sounds like this thing is moving.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you folks. The dealership isolated it to the air pump, they have one on order so it is not installed yet but as soon as it is I will let you know if the issue has been erectified.
