Coil Pack Order?

I changed my plugs and wires today, I did not do them one by one. When i reinstalled everything my car had half or less power, so i went through and checked everything and have came to the conclusion that my coils are out of order. So my question is how can figure out which coil goes to which plug? I have tried to find pictures illustrating the coil wires to see if they can be crossed and to see if that would tell me which way they where or may have been crossed with no luck, or maybe I'm digging to deep? I got the car in Nov. 07 so i have not done any work on it except the usual basic maintenance. I've done a few searches but not found anything on this particular subject (coil pack order)

if you can read electrical diagrams this shows the wire colors for each coil pack in order

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...&postcount=157

you might also want to make sure the plug wires aren't switched between leading and trailing

starting at the coil pack toward the front of the car working back towards the firewall the order is:

leading front rotor - trailing front rotor - leading rear rotor - trailing rear rotor

on each rotor the lower sparkplug plug is leading and the top spark plug is trailing

The reason i think the coil wires are out of order is i do remember the last coil plug wire went to lower rear plug, when car ran fine.

Day 2 with plug wires. I checked the actual connectors to the coils and they are right according to the diagram with little difference. But my car will not run if i plug the plug wires up the way i read everything too. In order to get my car to run i have to plug 1st coil into top front plug 2nd coil to bottom front plug 3rd coil to top rear plug and 4th into bottom rear plug. Help Help is there something wrong with the car?

Alright, so I made you a quick little diagram. You say the car won't run when you have them hooked up as below?

correct you have to flip flop coil 1&2 and 3&4 in order for it to run.

sounds more like you did not get the wiring harness to the correct coils... i did not think that was possible, but odder things have happened..

useing the diagram in this thread i traced the harness to the coils and they matched except the diagram shows the middle wires in each plug being of color on my car it's the outer wire to the left on each that is colored, it they also seem kinda hard to misplace each plug for the other due to the way there taped up as well.

That's my guess now too Scott............Umm............I'll see if I have a better diagram or a way to tell which electrical plug goes to each coil.

Do you think at this point with the plug wires going from the correct coils to the spark plugs, he should switch the electrical plugs leading to the coils around.............1&2 and then on 3&4?

This might have actually been screwed up before on this car. To the OP...did you buy this car used? Who had it before you or have you had any work done by anyone in that area of the car before? What year is it...not that it will matter?

yep,

i thought for some reason that the op had replaced the coils also.... it is always best to do this stuff one by one..

but it could have easily been messed up first..

that is just my opinion, i could be wrong..

tekdevil.. that is really all it could be.. you can leave it the way it is, or change the harness to the coils..

i bought it used cause it's yellow had to have it so it's an 04 gt, the coil harness is not twisted or anything. I do not now who has worked on it or anything. Is it possible that something is wrong with engine and it has to be wired this way to run?

slim to none..

i do find it hard to believe that you could get the connectors on the coils wrong, but stuff like that has happened...

if it ran fine before, and you did not do it one by one, then it wont run.. there you go..

the fact that you figured it out tells you the answer... it is running fine, correct??

yes it runs like before and i know it was wired this way before just really curious why it doesn't match everyone else's. i have new coils on the way so when i replace them i will switch the harness around so it appears to be right. Thanks for your help.

Okay............follow this:

This assumes you have the plug wire now in the position of my first diagram.

Now let's turn out attention to the coil harnesses.

Here is what I find in the wiring harness.

Each coil harness has three wires.

I want you to look at the color of the middle wire on each harness. The outer colors should be the same on each one, so just look at the middle wire. Update to this sentence is........my colored wires are on the outside as well.
This is how it should be:

Note to any future users of this info: This is the correct color order of the wires, but as stated, mine are also on the outside of the connector and not in the middle...........I'm an 05

Leading front is "G" = green
Trailing front is "W" = white
Leading rear is "Y/G" = yellow/green
Trailing rear is 'L/O" = blue/orange

Well........take my first crappy diagram and the post I just made above with the actual wire colors and see what's up? See if it matches or not and if it doesn't, then when you get the new coils....I'd really look into this and try it like the rest of us.......which I believe is how I stated it.

that is the order of my harness but i stated above my colored wires are not in the middle there on the left side if you where looking dead at the male end of the connectors. the other two wire are black and black white i think i didn't pay that much attention to those.

Wow!

I looked at the wiring diagram and not my car..........I'll look tomorrow.
Wiring diagram shows them in the middle.....but I just confirmed on my 05 they are not in the middle...........strange!

Tekdevil,

It appears as if my coil wiring doesn't have the colored wires in the center position either. I will take a better look and identify the actual colors, but I do not match the 04 wiring diagram either. My outer wires(left when looking directly at the male end) is the colored one. I'll have to get in there to see what order of the colors actually are. In other words...............my very first wire when looking from the front of the car is colored and appears to be green. The second connector appears to have a white wire in the first position. I'll edit this post in a few minutes with what I find out.
I edited my posts above so that I don't screw anyone up.

Updated: My order on the 05 with the colored wires being on the OUTSIDE:

Green
White
Yellow/Green
Blue/Orange

So the result is that the wire colors do match the order in the diagram, they just aren't in the middle position like the wiring diagram implies. It's either a typo in the original 04 diagram or they did an update!

Ya know what..............
Look at the original wiring diagram in post #2 by TEAM. If you notice the green wire is shown in the middle of the first coil connector, but it is labeled as "A". Every colored wire shown in the middle position on each connector is labeled as "A", so why they did it like that is beyond me, but I'll bet "A" implies the first positiion and therefore on the outside!

I was guessing this also. They made a change 05+. I wonder if the Factory Service manual for 05' reflects this change?

Careful...............the OP has an 04 and he's wired like my 05. On top of that, if you ignore the visual aspects of the wiring schematic and simply go by the labels, it is correct. This assumes "A" is on the outside, then "B" for the middle, and then "C" for the other outside.
