Clutch or transmission???
Hi all,
I have a 2004 RX8 manual. Driving the other day in 4th gear not really going very fast something weird happened. As I stepped on the gas a little to speed up, my rpms went up as usual but all of a sudden they dropped a little and you could hear it as well and then continued to go up as I sped up. So then I tried all gears and around 2500 rpm press down on the gas and it was like something slipping. Is this the clutch or the tranny? Could it be the engine going? Please.. need help.
Thanks!

It sounds to me its your clutch slipping. Do you drop the clutch at high RPMs most of the time? Do you smell something burning like rubber? How many miles do you currently have in your car?

I have dumped the clutch in high rpms but not very often. I have never smelled burning ruber. I have approx. 94,000 kms on the car. I have never been so on edge with a car in my life. What is with these cars?

Don't think that's obvious from the description of the effect, although that description is pretty confusing.
Daily -- rpm suddenly dropping at speed suggests engine. If it sounds like slipping to you, are the rpms higher than normal at a given speed?

Some people just hate the world Dal.. I usually just ignore them.
When I press the gas to the floor the rpms start to rise then drop a 1000 or so and something catches and they continue on the way up. It sounds like when you press the clutch while still pressing the gas but the rpms have the opposite effect. If I may add, I was at the drivethru bank today and it was quite echoey. I could hear a rattle when I let out on the clutch but no rattle when I pushed it in. Like metal rattling.
Thanks again..

Your description is impossibly vague. Does it do the exact same thing in all gears at the same exact RPM? Does it only happen under heavy throttle, or does it happen regardless of engine load?
Any way you cut it, it sounds like you have a relatively serious issue and that the transmission is going to have to come out to resolve it, so just take it to a shop and have them pull it and diagnose the problem.

Sounds like the clutch is starting to go. Simple to test it with a quick jab under load, but if the symptoms are not obvious to you it's best left to someone with experience.
Rotary.entuhsiast's recommendation is the way to go: take it in to a shop. They'll test drive and diagnosis it.

^^^^^^ so what did it turn out to be?????......
ok since this has been dead a while I will go ahead and ask here(if you dont mind) bacause i hate starting new threads about the same issues.... thnks
well my car started to feel like I was loosing power at first(04-miles41k)... I had to give it more gas in order for it to get going. This got worse over a week or so. Whatever gear im in if slam the gas the rpms and engine pick up but the car seems to take a while to react, I did smell the clutch burning when I did that. But I thought this was the case even on a good clutch?. (like the OP said rpms drop as if the clutch was catching after a deley). At first I thought it was a power loss so i changed my plugs and coils but still no luck, the engine did feel more responsive though. Same issue different day.
So does anyone agree that I have a transmission issue (clutch??).. and if so do I have to take it to the dealership or can any mechanic work on our transmissions.
thanks

The clutch shouldn't take long to engage, so if the revs are still rising a lot quicker than your accelerating after a second or two, the clutch is slipping. Slamming the gas doesn't cause any sort of smell for me either, unless you were slipping the clutch it shouldn't unless it is toast.
