On my way to school today, i noticed my clutch pedal started squeaking. It squeaks even if i leave the car in neutral, and just pump the clutch. So the clutch isn't slipping. I know there are some problems with our stock clutch pedal, and i, being a 2004 owner, am past the warranty date. Is this a problem, or does it have potential to turn into one? As always, your expert advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Mine squeaks as well. I'm worried about the whole "clutch snap-off" issue that's on here somewhere, but a symptom of that is the pedal moving side to side as well, which mine does not do, at least not yet

 

I took a closer look at mine, (i have to drive off the highschool campus to go to my auto shop class) and the pedal does not move side to side or anything. I just took a video of it, and I'm going to see if i can get it on youtube off of the school wifi.

 

When you push the clutch, is your squeak coming from the pedal itself, or from somewhere outside the cabin?

 

It sounds like its coming from up in the dash, the pedal is secure itself. I think i should be able to get that video up soon! :/

 

There is a current recall for the clutch pedal snapping off. AFIK, this is independent of the car age, so if it's broken, you can get it fixed for near-free.

That being said, there are a couple of little plastic bushings in there. A little spray lube (not WD-40 or the like) will fix the little squeak for a year or so.

 

Oh well thank you HiFlite999, yeah its fixed now c: one of the advantages of having auto shop! It isnt loose in anyway, and it doesnt move side to side. Thanks for the adivce, the wd40 worked wonders.

 

WD-40 will work for about 6 weeks in warm weather before it evaporates ...

 

the clutch pedal doesn't have a recall, it is covered by the 8yr/100k mile warranty and was extended to that point due to the safety issue it presents but never turned into a recall.

the squeak can also be caused by the upper spring bushings which get brittle and break which allows the clutch pedal tension springs to rub on the metal itself.

i inspected mine and the bracket is perfect but it squeaks, i'm going to try greasing the spring and pivots and see if that fixes it. but a sqeaky pedal does NOT necessarily mean the bracket is beginning to crack.

if you see little yellow circular bits down on the spring where they look out of place, you probably have the same issue i have. normally they sit inside the top hole where the spring turns to an L shape to hold in place.

of course replacing it will fix the issue as well but a quick inspection of the springs and left side bracket will tell you if you may lose your clutch or not.

 

Oh, well thank you, i will need to take a closer look at that before i go to work tonight. If it drives me crazy, which i dont believe that it will, id need to replace the entire clutch pedal assembly to fix this? Or just simply replace the bushings and such?

The plastic pieces are tiny - hard to replace. Easier just to put some oil on it once a year until the bracket breaks (which it eventually will).

 

There are pre-existing discussions to answer your questions/concerns without you starting a new one. SEARCHING is the key and would have lead you to the thread: "Clutch pedal Snap-off".

 

Thank you Grace, not to be rude or anything..but i did use the search function before i made this post, it came up with some stuff about the SARX crew, and what not to do to my car, and a list of aftermarket clutches for our car, along with some other things that werent entirely relevant to my problem. Thank you for steering me in the correct direction though

 

Even if you are out of warranty when the pedal breaks, you can get the refund from MNAO provided that you have the dealer reciept of the OEM bracket you purchased included with the letter. Labor for removal and installation will not qualify, however, the specific thread linked above will guide you how to do-it-yourself.

probably best to get one of the reinforcement bracket kits first, which can be swapped to a new unit even if the bushings are the only things failing, driving you nuts and require a replacement assembly.

 

Any preferences between the rotary fx and the racing roots brackets?

 

Race Roots was the first company to make it, I think FX copied the design. Both are priced the same. There are a few members who bought the Race Roots and had difficulty(discussed in the thread linked above) inserting the supplied bolt through the OEM bracket, haven't read any regarding the FX since it just became available recently. Even if your pedal bracket breaks, you can still use either reinforcement.

 

or buy their already complete assembly. i don't believe rotary FX offers the complete modified new units.

edit: apparently both offer the complete units but i would go with race roots, since they were the original design as mentioned.
