True, i guess it would only make sense if they could check as a favor and not charge. Depends on where she took it i guess.

Even though technically she spelled it wrong, I'd be a llittle worried if a dude had the username "Solitaire" and put a picture of a woman as his avatar.

So I've been thinking about this most of today. Mazurfer...maybe you can help me out here. If 2 coils were bad, or going bad, wouldn't there be a noticeable powerloss? Wouldn't you also expect a CEL for a misfire, or does that only come on from like a knock censor?

You have some very valid points. I guess I need to step back and think that one through!
Remember what my original guess was..................and we don't really know if she has the car back yet and that it's running fine.

^^^ I'm also curious how that produces smoke in the engine, unless there is an exhaust leak too.

Something doesn't seem right here.

edit:
Knock sensors on our cars are worthless

I guess depending on what 2 coils were bad would really help us out more. I would assume there was 1 coil per rotor that was out .... if 2 then im pretty sure the engine would just seize.

Maybe the coils werent blown fully...maybe it was just misfiring and pissing gasolene out into the exhaust ... i duno just guessing.

Smoke could have come from the coils melting and she did say it smelled like melting plastic.

But........he's right, she didn't mention any power loss. even though she was on the freeway doing 70 and then slowed down to 60, she never said power loss. When she stopped it(at work), I believe it was then towed, so it never was driven after that incident.

Think we may just have to wait to hear back from her.

I would think that if the coils really were really bad(which is yet to be proven BTW), then running at 60mph would dump a crapload of fuel in the CAT and got really, really hot? You'd think there would be power loss which is the part we all have an issue with.

You'd think she would've said it smelled like burning plastic if the coils literally melted, which I've never really heard of.
And we really don't know how much smoke was involved either.

All we do know is that "they" said two coils were bad and said there was an "o2 code".
Okay she said "Co2", but I'm sure she meant "o2".

We may never know if she doesn't come back and let us know if it's running fine and all they did was to switch out two coils.

I'm at 47k miles.

Thankfully I had an extended warranty that will cover the coil replacement and they are replacing all 4!

shweet!

Burning "plastic" could have also been the wires overheating from bad current coming off the coils. The rubber coating was probably stinking up.

Good, they should replace all four. At 47k miles it was about time to do it any way. A lot of people seem to only get about 35k-40k out of them. Let's just hope that no CAT damage resulted.
But........remember that if it does go out, your CAT is under warranty for 8 years or 80k miles!

So, when this happened on the way to work and you slowed down to approx. 60mph, you felt no real power loss? Even when getting off what I presume was highway and hit the streets before you got to work?
