cel gas leak

I have a shop in my area that works on my rx8. They checked a cel for me and it was the gas cap. They believe I have a gas leak.

anyone have this happen?

I've had my car throw a CEL for that a long time ago. I don't have a gas leak, just shitty gas mileage. lol

Slant makes gas caps, that is the one that fits the RX-8. I could tell it was the cap causing the CEL the first time I took the new one off. Since we don't pump our own gas in Jersey we never pick up on bad gas caps.

get a new cap, because it is a small price to pay just to try it out, if it don't work return it.

Had it on mine a while back. They said they did a leak check and found it to be the gas cap. Funny thing is, they never did anything about it, but no more cels (for that anyway).

I just had a CEL thrown and it was found to be the gas cap with a slow leak. There's apparently an updated gas cap that the dealership put on free of charge which resolved the matter.
WO says

INSTALLED UPDATED FUEL CAP--
PN FEY2-42-250 CAP,FUEL

Edit: here's the service bullitin on it: http://miata.net/garage/tsb/01-001-07-1748.pdf
edit: that TSB only applies to 06 RX8s but mine is an 05 and definately 'fixed' it.
Your dealer should fix it for you if they claim it's the cap per that TSB.

Mine had a CEL for small leak.

Just a loose gas cap. A push and three clicks each time I put on the cap now.

I had known about the gas cap issue so I made sure the cap was tight. I cleared KAM and NVRAM and visually inspected the engine bay(I did find a loose C clamp on some of my intake piping!) .. the car was driving fine so when I took it to the dealer to just get an ODB read i was suprised when they went ahead and fixed it.

I guess the cap seal just went belly up.

Do you know what the code was? Hard for anyone to say something concrete without that. If you know the code, post it here, or do a forum search on it.

When I got a CEL with a P0455, searching P0455 led to really good info. It's evaporative system leak, and for almost everyone it was the gas cap. For one poor guy it was a hole in a tank in the evap system - he had run a screw into it while installing speakers. Cost a bundle to fix.

Do you use Reliable Rotary?

Which shop do you use?

I read the forumn almost every day and haven't heard of a bad tank.

Sorry, can't help.
