CD Player Trouble

Alright, so my CD player in my 04 8 just decided to stop working! I have no idea why as everything else in the stereo still works. It has been this way for a little bit and now I am finally getting around to figuring out what is wrong. Does anybody know what is wrong/how to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated!

for future posts/thread put as much detail as you can for the car, this one for example. what kind of radio is in your car? single disk? 6? tapedeck? mini? satellite? aftermarket?
give us poop to work with and get poop back

also give this thread a look over

If anyone knows the answer, it would be of major help! Have tried all methods I could find on the forums, and still nothing.

People still use compact discs?

Anyway, since Google Drive is blocked at my office, can you describe the problem in any sort of detail? All I've got right now is "doesn't work" which is incredibly non-useful.

Also, this would probably have been better posted in the Interior, Audio, and Electronics sub-forum...

In the video, it shows that when a CD is inserted it just stalls on the CD screen then just turns off. If you try to manual select CD, it does the same. Everything else works, even external device so I dont know what is wrong.

Sounds like it may be a mechanical issue with the changer itself. Is the changer in the dash or the trunk?

If it were me, I'd take a small screwdriver and have a poke around inside. Can't really break it more than broken.

Its in the head unit. I will have to try poking around, I was just skeptical of tearing my dash up.

It's not hard to remove the head unit. Just time consuming and a little uncomfortable getting to the hidden bolt.

I love my CD player and can't imagine not having it. (In fact, was looking at the new '19 Miata, which no longer has one. Which means I will not be buying a '19 Miata. Kind of like recent VW GTIs: no 3-door? No deal!)

Except if you have Bose, the CenterPoint in RX-8 only works with CDs.

I still have the stock head unit, so no USB for me.

All the other sources don't sound as good and can experience interruptions.

With all that said...

30 more HP, higher redline and backup camera are much more important than a CD player that most people don't use IMO.

I have a good headset for music at home anyway.

Uh, no… that's a common misconception around these parts, but it's simply not true. An unfact. CDs are great, and many people enjoy 'em, including CNET's resident audio expert, who can and does listen to any format he prefers:

And I'm sure he doesn't choose a mailbox moving through a sea of traffic as the venue for his eargasms. Nor a convertible Miata for that matter.

The old Corolla beater I drove had a cassette player, LOL.

There are those AUX to cassette adapters you can buy, though, so you can plug it in your phone and the car will play the music in your phone.

A big reason I use the CD player in my 8 is that the controls are integrated into the steering wheel, so the distraction is very minimal.

I could use my phone and plug the AUX cable in, but every time I want to skip or repeat a track, I'd have to fumble with my phone and that's a big no-no, and my hands would be busy with the steering wheel and gear stick anyway.

With the new Miata, though, I'd imagine the Android Auto/CarPlay has very well integrated controls for your phone, and I'd imagine there is also a USB port as well, so the loss of CD player isn't a big deal at all to me.

Not me. Hey, I "get" nostalgia for older stuff, which can be fun. But 8-tracks were crap from day one; poorly made with horrible audio quality even when they first appeared. And cassettes? You gotta be kidding me. A medium designed for vocal dictation, dragged – pulling and screaming – against its inherent limitations into recording and playing music, Nakamishi notwithstanding.

I just listen to whatever sounds best, whether the technology is old or new. And that means vinyl and CD (minus the early crappy ones). And I like having one medium for both home and car. Yeah, obviously quality vinyl playback is in-home only, but the same CD that I play at home on my Oppo UHD-205 Blu-ray Disc player pops into the CD player in my 8 and voila… there's great sounding music. All without me having to deal with playlists, directories, CarPlay, smartphones, streaming, folders, volumes or any other crap like that.

That's certainly interesting since when it first came out, tapes are already starting to become obsolete.

I will have to see a non-nav RX-8 head unit for reference, though. Mine has the touchscreen nav and has a totally different layout.

I am little surprised you didn't say "now get off my lawn" at the end.

But really though, you not wanting a 2019 Miata just because it doesn't have a CD player... Come on, man.

A roadster will have a lot of noise naturally... So sound quality really goes out of the window at this point.
