Catalytic Converter bad??

My car started getting a blinking CEL whenever it's in the high rpms. So far I've only changed the coils and it didn't help. I'm going to change the plugs soon (already have them but need to put them in.) If that doesn't fix the problem, is it most likely the cat is bad? I only have 43k miles so it should be covered. Does it cost anything to take it there and get it replaced (labor, checking to see if its bad, etc.) I'm kind of tight on money atm. Thanks for the help in advance.

I took mine into the dealership about a week and a half ago to check the cat, it was 100$ diagnostic fee, but since I needed a new one, it was all free, and the diagnostic fee got waived.

Well after I change my plugs, I'll probably take it to a dealer to see what they say. Is there anyway to tell if its toast?

How do you pull the codes? If you like to do stuff outdoors its nice. I'm from Florida, so I hate the snow here. What's your job? I'm an electrical and environmental technician on the f-16's here.

you can either use a cobb accessport or go to autozone, they'll check the codes for free.

a bad cat's code is P0420

Check the cat visually.

Best investment for you would be a code reader off eBay - $50 or so and know exactly what the computer has flagged, and reset it if you like.

Really there are so many things that can flash a high-rev CEL that you are just wasting your time guessing and then replacing parts at random. How would you feel if the dealer did it that way?

For the cost of just one coil you would be ahead of the game.....

Well since I had already bought the spark plugs I decided to change them. So far seems to have fixed the problem. If I suspect that the cat might still be the problem; will the dealership check it without paying? I'm pretty short on money so I don't have enough for a $100 check up.
