Was there ever a definitive decision on that? I usually let my car warm up but there are times I'm running late and such... I usually give it a couple minutes though.

he was referring to letting the engine warm up before taking the revs to 4k, not the procedure used to prevent flooding.

the ecu will not let you over rev or over do it till the motor is ready.. under 4k is a safe bet...
that silly owners manual. to anyone that wants to try. go out with a cold motor and pull out in front of traffic and nail it and see what happens.
btw, i just get in the car an drive it, cold. i think if i lived in a cold area again, NOT EVER, i might give about 45 seconds before driving.

I wasn't saying that bro. I was saying...does he warm it up properly before exceeding 4k rpms? I also will turn on and off my car, even cold. My theory though is people get excited the first time they get in their rx-8 for the day (or whatever)...forget to warm it up, and then cry when their engines goes due to redlining it below proper running temperature.
you cannot over rev the motor when it is cold.. you cannot really do anything stupid while the motor is cold. well you could have no oil..
the ecu is smart.

anyone? i still haven't had my car fixed, the local dealership avoids me and i have a broken rx-8 on my hands... has anyone managed to fix a similar problem or is there a way to contact like Mazda EU or something, maybe an e-mail address?

Have you experienced the problem when the engine is cold or does it happen only when the engine is warm?

me too seems a lot of us are having this issue and nobdy seems to be able to say how to fix it. I've read so many different things from people with this fault from replacing:
coil
spark plugs
leads
upgraded starter
flashed
battery
new engine
engine management system (according to mazda)
nobody seems to know how to fix this not even mazda reading the posts, it's obviously a manfacturer fault for so many rx8 owners to be having this issue, why are mazda not responsible for selling cars that you can't even fill up at the petrol station if your engine is hot!!!!!!!!
i think we all need to contact watchdog - why should we be the ones to suffer, what happens if i stall my car in the outside lane of the motorway in busy traffic potentially i could be sat there for 45 minutes trying to start my car or having to wait for the engine to cool down enough to start on its own, surely this could cause massive problems on a motorway or even a crash, i know this seems extreme but it is so possible. mazda need to take some responsibility!!!!!
people are part exing these cars because of these faults and it's people like me that are stupid enough to buy it thinking i have this amazing car when really i've bought a car that doesn't like driving short distances and won't start again if i drive long distance, and it's only when you start driving longer distances an stopping and starting within the hour that you realise about this fault, it is not something you would necessarily realise straight after buying the car. i've had my car 6 months and i've bought a car that clearly wasn't fit for being sold!!!!!!! I am so stressed and fed up trying to sort this out and annoyed that nobody not even mazda know how to fix it!!!!!!

Power!!
There are 4 threads about this all the sudden!!
Here are three know problems with the 8 that can cause this. All have TSBs and the dealer should fix all under bumper to bumper.
1) Weak starter. There is an upgraded part
2)Weak battery. There is an upgraded part
3)Fried coils. There is an upgraded part and they only last about 30K miles anyway so expect to replace them or go aftermarket.
4)Replace motor. In the US Mazda extended the warranty on engines.
When I brought in my car in to my dealer complaining of the same problem it was diagnosed as a broken side seal and they replaced my engine. Many others have seen success with the upgraded starter.

me again, thought i'd give you an update.
after replacing i think everything that was mentioned here with no success the dealer ordered me a new engine, replaced it for free even tho my warranty had expired 2 years ago.
i have now driven for about 1500km with my free new engine and it feels a ton better than when i bought it, replacing the engine did the trick :)
maybe the warranty has been extended here in Europe too?
I did however order myself a new car just before i was told i'll be getting a free new engine :)
since the way the economy is right now i think i'll be keeping both cars.

I actually did break down on a 3-lane highway in bumper to bumper traffic. It was nerve-wracking. It took 10 minutes if cranking for 20 seconds waiting for 20 seconds to finally ge tthe car to catch. Thank GOD the battery was up to the challenge. I have this problem consistently just as described. The hotter it is the harder it is to start. I have replaced my coils/cables/plugs. While this helped with pre-ignition knocking, it didn't help the starting. The plugs had been in for 60,000 miles (I know I shouldn't have let that happen) and they were rust-colored.

RX8 wan't start when warm
I had this same problem, After driving for a bit turning the car off for a quick stop then getting back in..i was kind of screwed. I had to wait 5 minutes. I fixed my problem tho. I turned out that it was the Synthetic oil I used (pennzoil). Synthetic tends to act differently in rotary. ( in the middle of no where, I had to use it cause I needed more oil and the gas station only had synthetic). Not all synthetics just some. And if you took your car to get an oil change at a quick lube, jiffy lube or something like that. chances are they put in synthetic in. They don't have a clue. I changed my oil put in Valvoline 5w 20 conventional. BAM. No issues. Hope this helps others.

I just went to the dealership today and found out that it can be Carbon build up in your air filter. I'm getting my car back on Thursday but they guaranteed the car to work perfectly again. well see what happens

Good luck with that. You can't have "carbon build up" in your air filter. That's total BS lol

Question!
So I have the same exact problem as you guys with my 04 but these stories never mention whether it cranks or not!? Mine wont crank or do anything for 10 minutes after driving till warm and shutting down. It seemed like some peoples cars cranked. Does this change anything? I dont see how this would warrant an engine replacement as the car runs like a champ until you shut it off...

Can you define what you mean by "Crank"? It's an often misused term.
If you are saying that when you turn the key, the starter won't even spin, then it's a completely different issue than if it does spin. Lots of new owners tend to say "cranks but won't turn over" or something like that which is a contradiction, so I want to be clear on what you are experiencing.

RIWWP the starter doesn't seem to spin at all, It just makes no attempt to start whats so ever... Then all the sudden it fires right up. Its really strange, I was looking it over again last night, the negative battery terminal was a tiny bit loose and wouldnt tighten anymore so I am putting a new one of those on tonight but I have a feeling that wont fix it but fingers crossed!

The problem is that battery terminal. It may not seem like it, but it is.
Disconnect the clamp, clean both the clamp and the post (the post is probably heavily corroded away where the clamp meets it), and then when you re-connect, dont just tighten it down, but make sure you can actually get the screw to clamp the clamp on the post and not just tighten on itself.
You may need to replace the battery, or add material to thicken the posts.

Well unfortunately the terminal didn't fix my problem, I had another car try and jump my car while it wasn't attempting to start and that didn't change anything... I think that rules out the battery. Does anyone think it would be the Clutch Switch? 04 Rx8 Manual transmission.
