car won't go/shift into gear when on, help needed

Mazda all of a sudden will not **** into any gear when on but when off will shift into any gear without problem. Up untill now clutch and gearbox was working properly. Decided to start the car in first gear (with clutch engaged) but it stalled. My clutch pedal is not as sturdy as my gas and brake pedal (will slightly move out of its position) - maybe it is a broken clutch bracket ?
Has anyone expirienced a problem like this in the past?
My 8 is a 2004 model 64k km mileage.

Any help or opinions will be highly appreciated.

sounds like a busted clutch pedal.
isn't there a sensor or something on it that senses when the pedal is depressed to allow the car to start?

there is a sensor on the back of the pedal with a wire connection going into the side. pull out the little plunger. we had this problem on another members car when doing the bracket install

I have checked the clutch bracket and it isn't broken. After putting the car into first gear and trying to start, it stalled and now will not start up at all. Initially thought I flooded it, but have tried all the deflooding procedures, including taking out the spark plugs and will still not start.
I have also tried disconecting the sensor on the back of the clutch pedal but no luck.
I have a european version Rx8 2004 with 63k kilometers on the clock.
Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue like this in the past?

there are probably 6000 posts on here where the car didnt start. so yes we have heard similar issues in the past.

What do you mean by "it didnt start"? you have the car in neutral with the clutch pedal fully depressed, you turn the key and..... what happens?

what changes if any have been made to the car?

is the car yours originally or did you purchase it second hand?

is this the 5 speed or the 6 speed?

btw reconnect that sensor on the clutch pedal.

After over 3 hours of trying to deflood the rx8 it eventually did start (engine turned on) - so my last post informing that it will not turn on isn't up to date. Unfortunetly still can't shift into any gear. So to sum up:
-Can't shift into gear when engine is on but can when engine is switched off
-Tried to turn the rx8 on in first gear with clutch engaged but stalled and flooded
-There is no grinding sound when wanting to change into any gear when on - the car only moves/jerks forward a tiny bit
-The clutch pedal isn't broken
-I can see the slave cylinder working (moving) when clutch is pushed to the floor so clutch hydraulics are probably fine
- The rx8 is a second hand european 231 bhp, 6 gear version but was purchased over 2 years ago from the first owner
- Up untill the gear shift problem the rx8 was sound as so was the clutch and gearbox.
- Have connected and disconected the clutch sensor

you can move the shifter through the gears with the engine off? with the clutch pedal depressed and not?

you can put it in neutral when off but once started it will not move into gear even if you rev it a bit to rev match?

you started it in first gear with the clutch pedal pushed in but it stalled?

Thanks your reply.
Yes I can move into any gear when engine is off with and without depressing the clutch pedal
I did start the car in first gear with clutch pushed to the floor but it stalled and then flooded
Have not tried to rev the engine and put it into any gear (from neutral) as I am woried I might do further damage

Have never changed the gear oil but it was inspected at a mazda service around 4 month ago and they said there was no need for it to be changed

Sounds like the clutch isn't working??

If the transmission shifts when off...and doesn't when running that would be my first place to look...could be the hydraulics..or the disc/fork.....

Check to see if the slave moves when the pedal is pushed

yeah i really think- to me- it sounds like a slave cylinder problem. checked the fluid level?

if the slave checks out then its the clutch.

I have a very similar problem to your. It looks like my cluth is sighlty missplaced and while im driving it very hard to shift in any gear and impossible to shift in 5 or 6ht gear. I own a mazda 2004 just like your 238 hp. I had another weird thing happening on too, when i push on my cluth and try to put it on first gear when starting my car, sometime it dosen't want to shift and my car is going forward has i try to put it on my first gear. Sounds like all my gear aren't working propely or sometime not at all just like you.

To update, I reved the engine to aprox. 2.5 k and found a could change into gears again as normal - the fault had gone away!!! Anyway the mazda dealer advised to change the slave cylinder so the same situation doesn't repeat itself in the future.

Thanks for your help zoom44.

Same problem except my pedal is half way down and feels real soft. I replaced the slave and bled the systme 2 different ways. I replaced the clutch and thrown out bearing. I pedal assembly is not broken and car doesn't go into gear unless turned off. Any ideas?

same problem same car

I replaced my clutch with a new Spec 6 months ago and now I have the same problem. When the car is running I can't shift into any gear, so at stop lights I have to turn it off and shift into 1st then turn it on. I took it to Aamco and they told me it was the clutch and I had to replace it again. I offered the idea of the pedal but they told me it wasn't the pedal or hydraulics. Is it the clutch? Any thoughts?

I would look at the hydraulics...if the clutch was gone it likely wouldn't be drivable in any gear...
