car running like crap

okay, here's the skinny, 04 auto in yellow, had the recall done, no engine replacement, about 43k on the odo.

Car starts okay when cold, seems to run fine until it's been on a while and warmed up, then it starts to lope a bit, (idles like I've thrown a plug wire practically) While driving, it does okay, then when the revs get past about 4-5k, makes this insane noise, very loud, and it's kinda sputtering/burbling as well. I have the AEM intake with a Borla exhaust on it, stock cat, stock wires/plugs, no major mods other than those 2 minor ones. This problem happened a LONG time ago, just for like 2 seconds, almost like a gear wouldn't catch, then never happened again. I feel a loss of power when this is going on too, it's not pulling anywhere near as hard as it would when it's running right. It's been doing this for a while now, sounds awful, runs awful, something is obviously wrong but the first time I took it in they couldn't find anything. Now I have a constant cel so maybe it threw a code? Could this be a cat issue, plug wires? The burbling is leading me to believe it's a fuel/spark issue, but the noise from under the hood and the other symptoms seem like they could be something else, ugh, anyone who has some suggestions please pass them along, I tried searching/reading through an armada of threads and nothing I found really helped. :p Will probably take it in Saturday, see if they can check the cel etc. Thanks for looking

It sounds like a misfire, maybe a coil pack gone bad.

Thanks! I'll make a note of that when it goes to the dealer.

Sounds similar to what happened with my '05, except that it would do it around 6500 rpms. Turned out to be a bad MAF sensor.

I am having the same issues. I replaced the coil and the plugs, and cleaned the MAF. The o-ring broke on my MAF but that wasn't the cause of the problems because I was having them before the o-ring broke. Guess I need to look into buying one of those things. Are the one's from Autozone worth using or should I stick with OEM parts?

OEM when you can do it has always been the better deal for me, the quality is better most of the time, and when you take it to someone thay can't tell you "well you didn't use..." since you did when you buy oem.

I heard back from them today, they've replaced my coils, plugs, made no meniton of the MAF, and have cleared the CEL. Now they're keeping and driving it to make sure the CEL stays cleared and that the issue is gone, so far so good, guess we'll see hwo it develops from there.

got it back, still idles a little rough but way better than before, runs a lot stronger now, no more funky noises pushing it at high revs, I can hear it wanting too, but it doesn't so I'm happy. No loss of power or anything either, looks like it was fuel/spark related.

it will take several drive cycles for the idle to settle down....

and take the time to run the crap out of it.. it helps...

Exact same problem, different answers, no solution

I'll try not to make this too long but...I drove out of state to buy the car cause the price was right and it had all the features I wanted. When test driving I didnt push the car very hard and kinda regret it. The deal went through, and I start driving home (By aid of navagation no less ) and decide to give it what it's got on the freeway ramp. With it floored the engine starts making sounds mentioned above at about 4-5k rpm. Was so loud I thought the engine was shot! You know the 6 intake vaulve thingy's in the engine? The sound was still a little unhealthy but not loud, then when the next two opened (4-6k rpm or so) it got bad and then even worse when the last three opened(about 7k+) The guy had an aftermarket intake (a cheap one no less) and buying one from mazda was rediculas (about $1,000 for everything) so I got the next best thing, a racing beat intake. Absolutly didnt help the problem. So the I replaced the spark pulgs ($150), also no help Finally It got to the point where the car woulnt go over 7k rpm and shortly after that wouldnt go over 6k rpm. Then the engine would start to overheat. Oh yeah, and I should mention the car always would run better when cold, and the car was out of warrenty when I bought it (59,000 miles on it). So I decide it's time to eat the cost of the deal. They determined it was the catalytic converter and that was covered under 80,000 emission warrenty . Never ran better since I bought the car! Untill about a week later started acting up again. To the point the car would stall and wouldn't start again for about 15 minutes (did it before but forgot to mention). So back to the dealer it goes, this time they say it's a valve in the injection lines that has essesive carbon buildup on it. They cleaned it ($200 in labor) and replaced the spark plugs for free and again, ran like it was new. Now the problem is starting up once agian and I'm getting a little sick of it. It's embarrasing when the car stalls in a drive through and you have to push it out of the way cause it cant start! anywhooo, The defroster/A/C controles one day just stopped Illuminating and responding, and I had to replace both tail lights because they both filled up about two inches of water and the new ones I got(Used) are fogging up as well. Any help?! Thanks!
