Car hesitates to start and losing power

Have a 2007 RX8 w/ 52k miles. Just a lil over a week ago the car hesitates to start and has lost engine power. If I reve the engine before taking off I cant feel it being sluggish, but taking off normal I can feel it hesitating. When turning a corner in 2nd gear, I notice the car hesitating the most. Thought it may have been bad gas, but I put in fuel injector cleaner, gas dryer and new fuel in the car. Car had spark plugs and air filter replaced under a yr ago. Any suggestions on what the prob could be?

Was it the fuel line or filter? I'm having similar problems.

Actually no.. Car kept getting worse di I took to the shop on Monday. Shop called and told me it was engine failure and that it needs to be replaced. Sooo.. Mazdas warranty is covering motor and I am picking up car today. If I were you I would at least take your car to the dealership and have them evaluate.

Sorry to hear that and good luck...

If you don't mind can you give me more details. When you say hesitate, how much of a power difference are you talking about?

Does it hesitate when you cold start or when you start when the engine is warm?

How does it idle?

For me, I'm thinking it's bad ignition coils. My cat is ok but could be failing too. I have ignition coils on the way and I'm hoping that cures my problem. For the past month my car feels like it lost maybe 10% of power. I'm hoping I don't need a new engine.

Sure, not a prob. The car was hesitant to start warm or cold, but especially cold. Temp has just started to chng where I live and car did not wabt to start at all over Thanksgiving. Thats when I know my prob was worse than I thought. After the holiday I was going to buy new spark plugs and coils for the car to see if it would fix the prob. I had already chked the cat and it was good. The car would idle good. Not too hi/low. As for losing power, the car did not like low rpms. Taking off in first and turning corners in 2nd was the worst. I could feel tge car hesitate in power and when I would get to about 3,000rmp I could feel the car kick in to want to build speed. Thats why I thought it had something to do with spark plugs or coils. Before I spent the money I just wanted to take to Mazda to evaluate to see if I was correct before I spent any more money. They did a compression test and my car was border line failure. Since Mazda extended the warranty on these motors, everything was coverd and I did not pay anything. I hope I was able to answer your questions. Let me know if I can help further. Wish ya luck?

What's so unique about Plano?

it was one of the first areas that started seeing engine failures back when it all started. that whole area from Plano down through Dallas and especially around Waco saw the first big swath. High heat, idling in traffic and low oil circulation and before they started turning the fans on earlier. there were dealers in in Plano and Waco that already had a dozen cars each right about the time we started hearing about failures in Vegas, Phoenix and Florida

I called the dealership today and verified that my engine is still under warranty. The mechanic stated that majority of the problems on a 2006+ are from bad ignition coils. If changing the ignition coils fixes my problem then a compression test is not warranted.

I received my ignition coils today and swapped them out. One of the coil was bad. After swapping them out my car now runs like it did before. Engine started right up and accelerated just like when I bought her.

I wish you luck on your rebuild.

My 2004 model has done 108k, and am having similar problems. Sluggish, reluctant to start, compression is low, and it flooded the other day and had to be towed. Plugs and leads replaced. Dealer said it could need an engine reco or replacement soon! I'm very disappointed in this news as I love the car. Can anyone help -- is this normal after only 108k??

Yeah, I just got an 04 in April with those same problems with 77k on the dash. Long story short, yeah.. It got a new engine put in it and I was thankful. 3yrs/100k mile powertrain warranty cames with the new block. I had a blown apex seal and oil in my air box.

Thanks. I hesitate to ask, but how expensive to put a new engine in?

From the information you have given I would say it's quite probable. If the compression is too low then the engine may require a rebuild.

Price of rebuilds can vary depending on what needs to be replaced. Check the 2nd post, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...4210016AABALmE

In North America and Canada 2004-2008 models have 8 yrs or 100,000 mile warranty. Australia (Wilbur's case) does not have the extended warranty, https://www.rx8club.com.au/forum/vie...php?f=1&t=4357

And neither does Europe . My motor failed at 91,000 kilometers and the dealer wanted around 8,000 euro to replace it, I was going to rebuild it myself, but the cost of new parts, shipping and customs was unfookinbelievable , so I"m doing V6 install. Being in Australia Wilbur, your probably looking at around 4 or 5 grand to have it built properly.
