I had my brakes replaced several months ago and they still squeak when they're cold. I suppose that's how brakes are, but I don't recall having this problem with my last car...

Mine started squealing at about 7000. I got it fixed around 7500. The brake pads were replaced, and while they were there they evened out some warping on the rotors. didn't even need to print the TSB, just mentioned the squeeling and asked if they had the pads in stock. They said no pads, but would let me know when they came in so my car didn't have to sit at the shop waiting for the pads to come in.
I'm nearly at 11000 and no noise so far, remarkably less brake dust.

Mine started squeeling at about 4000 miles. I've got 22,000 on it now...so that was 18,000 with squeeling brakes...UGH!...
Some of you might never experience it as it seems the new brake pads were a running production change...only cars with 18" wheels and VINs lower than JM1FE*****145826 are covered by the TSB.

Remember....
the original Pad design is a VERY aggresive material. It chews up rotors like nobody's business. The rotor will wear out far faster than the pads will. I have my front brakes completely apart right now and the wear to the front rotors is very visible. The pads are as thick as brand new pads. I have 15k on the car.
SpeedRacer has brought his car to the dealership for brake "shudder" and they found that the front rotors needed to be completely replaced. They were worn beyond spec for re-machining. The pads were fine.
All that dust people see on their wheels?...... mostly rotor material. Thats right ground up iron.
Its nothing new though. Aggresive pads have always been known to wear out rotors, and fast.
The new "revised" pad material that Mazda is using is less aggresive, more rotor friendy, quieter and less dusty (due to not chewing your rotors). There IS a compromise though. You cant go remarkably less aggresive without giving up something else. Its all about compromise.
That brings me to my point.......I personaly would not want brand new pads put on my worn rotors. It is proper to put two new surfaces together, so they can bed in properly, not one new and one old. A proper brake job includes machining the rotor surface or complete rotor replacement to go along with the new pads.
The dealership will not turn your rotors for free within this TSB. I suggest getting it done at the time of pad replacement. Its the right way to do it. Its a shame that Mazda is half assing this TSB, it SHOULD be included.
I am eligible to get new pads, but i'm taking a different approach. Since my brakes started sqeaking at 10k miles, I think its something that can be vanished for another 10k. It requires a surgical cleaning of your brakes. This means they need to be removed. I know not evryone is prepared or willing to do this, but it is an idea for some of us. It worked for me.
The dust material is everywere around your brakes. There is a groove in the middle if the pad itself that gets packed solid with rotor material in dust form. Also behind the pads and around the shims and retainer clips. I believe this is a big reason the sqealing happens after a few thousand miles for most people. This all need to be brushed away with a stainless or brass wire brush along with Brake Cleaner spray. You will be amazed at the pile of dust that comes out of all the crevases. A good disc brake qiuet material like permatex should be applied to the pad backing, shims and caliper. Pad retainer clips should be greased lightly with a brake grease/quiet product. put it all back together and no sqeal. When my rotors and pads need to be replaced I will do them together.

Gyro, I have no problems with my rotors, they are not warped and there is no brake shudder. I'm just glad to have nice, new, quiet pads. Why go through all the rigorous cleaning of the old pads when you can get new ones which produce much less dust?

Perhaps a dumb question, but what is brake shudder?
Have to ask because when I slam on my brakes (I've had to do it the last two days in a row due to near-accidents in inclement weather), it grinds to a halt (you can literally hear and feel the grinding), whereas with the prior brake pads, my tires screeched to a stop.
Anyone else experience this phenomenon? Is it a problem or is it normal?

I have an 05.
At 7k miles, I now have a mild sqeal.
I have horrible brake dust as well.
The dealer told me all 05's have the new pads.
Screw me. rinse-repeat

I had the brake TSB done today at 4600 miles. the service advisor knew about the TSB but still made a copy of the one i brought to show to the mechanic. they also didnt test drive it beforehand...took my word for it. the squeak is gone and i am happy. $18 for the oil change, wash and vacuum too.

markd,
It sounds like the grinding you're describing is the ABS engaging. ABS modulates the brake pressure 20-30 times a second which feels/sounds like grinding. I'm not sure why you were getting screeching stops with the older pads. ABS is supposed to prevent this. Maybe they found a problem with your ABS and fixed it when they replaced your pads.

'nother Brake Squeal question
Situation:::
- Front Brakes were squealing, after two trips to dealer they replaced front pads & shims per TSB.
- Front Brakes now squeal only when I am backing up and are much louder than ever.
Any ideas on cause? Solutions?
I will take it back to the dealer but I have found that being armed with knowledge prior to contacting them is an absolute requirement.
Thanks in advance folks!
Craig

My 8 is in the dealer for the squeal TSB today. They told me they received a call from Mazda yesterday that not all of the repairs have worked. They may have to do it a few times.
They told me to pay close attention when I get it back so they can verify if this is "wide-spread" or not.

Mine were replaced and rotors cut as well... and still squeaks. Pretty much only for the first mile when cold and wet out though. Once used a few times, they're usually OK.
Oh well, I'm gonna leave 'em alone for now.

I have an 05.
At 7k miles, the squeal started. (all the time, hot or cold)
I went to the local dealer who told me I have the new pads already and there is nothing
they can or will do. They told me this is normal for cold weather.
Even if they are correct, this is horrible.
I am embarrassed to stop anywhere now. I had to create a new driving style to stop earlier and sort of coast into the spot so people do not hear me and turn around to see what is making that sqeal.
It is bad enough that I just purchased new Rotora rotors and EBC pads (and braided lines).
Hopefully this setup will not squeal anything like it does now.
If it does, at least I have some bling bling to make me feel better.. haha

I had mine done today. They turned the rotors and replaced pads. My service notoce said" Performed recall 04-006/04. Updated pads, replace pads & machine rotors" Too early to tell if it is fixed.

I have an 05. The squeal started at 7k miles and has never stopped. (8600 now)
It is horrible. Sounds like the warning tab is hitting, but it is not.
I used to love people checking out my car when I pulled into a parking spot.
Now I hide.. because they are looking to see WTF is that LOUD squeal.
This is a nightmare.. no other way to describe it.
Went to dealer.. told me I have the new pads already and there is nothing they can or will do, period.
The squeal is so bad and loud, I ordered new Rotora rotors and EBC pads.(and Goodridge lines) (combo working well for other owners questioned)
Sucks to dump $800 on brakes when I should not have to.. but at least they will look nice.

How can they stand there and tell you there is nothing they can do?
Did you duplicate the problem with the car at the dealership?
