Blown Rear Diff??

I think i may have blown the rear diff out of my car... brought it to mazda the dealer agreed it was bad and called Mazda to get it covered under warrenty. A Rep from MNO came out and said the rear end wasnt blown, it just needed a fluid change... so i took these pics and vid while changing the fluid... tell me this rear diff isnt blown... (YOU NEED SOUND!)

that sounds is coming from the diff.... also note that when you spin the driverside wheel both spin... when you spin the pass wheel, it makes that sound and the other side doesnt spin

rear diff should NOT make any sound, at least not like that.

so yes, you have a problem in there. it still works now, but Its probably on its last leg.

I woud have them flush it. If it is still bad, then tell them to fix it and give you a reimbursement for the fluid change since they recommended it and it didn't do squat.

i asked that, and if they did it, and it was still bad... i wouldnt get reimbursed because it was 'maintenance' and i didnt wanna spend the $200 to have them do it... so a wendy's meal and a trip to Cape Cod later, the diff is flushed and has Royal Purple 75w-90 in it... ill wait a week and bring it back and hopefully get a new diff installed since mazda should be happy...

how many miles u have on your car?

cuz if I remember correctly the maintenance calls for 60K miles (for Rear diff)

You should've just do it yourself, or buy the fluid and have some local garage to do it for you, its mad easy, probably cost less than 50 bux. then they would not have any more excuse to deny anything.

I'm sorry but how stupid is that Mazda Rep? As far as the drain plug that's not a whole lot of metal. I would just rev it up to 9000 and drop the clutch. That should finalize the deal.
I blew mine at 3000 miles and it was so full of metal it was glopping out when they drained it. I had a pile of metal about the size of an egg. And it was just shuttering going around corners.

It's ok, you can admit it was me. You forgot to mention how much metalic particles we found after the first drain. Never seen that much under normal conditions. Hearing the sound in person put shivers in my spine.

You need a new rear diff. The rep that said it just needed a flush is either a complete idiot or is a dishonest piece of crap. Your rear diff should never make a sound when gently spun by hand and it should never ever knock. If it still moves the car at all, it won't last very long.

That would suck if that thing seized up while you driving it. How does it sound when you drive it? like loud tires?

I just changed my diff. fluid and there was not nearly that much metal on my drain plug.

they cannot suggest you to do any of the things other than the one listed in the service manual.

since when is there a line that saids "Flush the rear diff" in the manual? at least not in mine. All it saids is drain and refill.

So that Mazda rep is just full of bull, as long as you have the receipts of the fluid that you bought with the right spec. Tell them to fix the rear diff or u'll bring this to the court.
