How can you tell the differences in sound from a backfire compared to a detonation? I am by myself most of the time and cant watch the rear for flames and most of the time there are subdued pops I can definitely tell come from the back. Other times there is a bang so loud a gun shot is it's only comparison and I'm unable to locate its origin. btw 04 six speed with greddy turbo kit with boost gauge and bov. no afr stock exhaust and unknown midpipe situation. (new to me car three weeks old.)

Not really. There could be other potential issues with your car, which you are not aware of. How do you monitor your engine, with the sever lack of gauges? Is the turbo/ kit modified in any way?

 

sound anything like that? if so its probably an anti-lag system for the turbo, i would just ask the previous owner exactly what mods were done to the car then post here and you will get a lot more help.

 

Like I said, new to me car for only 3 weeks and haven't been able to buy any gauges yet. Had to buy a clutch. As for the Turbo it runs 5-7 paid and runs out of boost at high rpm so I don't believe it's anything other than stock.

 

That was cool. Yes just that loud but nowhere near that frequent

 

Is the BOV, VTA or Re-Circed? and does this happen on decel or between gear changes?

If so and the BOV is vented to atmosphere, the fuel mix is going rich, and lighting off in the exhaust.

 

Hi Factor, the bov blows into the atmosphere, Greddy type S I believe. It doesn't do it between shifts,usually at steady speed after hard acceleration. Also the car runs (to me) overly rich to the point of eye burning at idle.

 

Recirculate your blow off valve ... will make a world of difference.

Highly unlikely you would detonate with a rich mixture... tends to go the other way... and if it were happening it'd only occur a couple times Max before a seal would give completely.

Also detonation is a ping, heard from inside the engine... considerably different than a backfire.

there isn't really a "kit". Sure you can buy the Ricirc fitting for the RS, but you still have to weld in a bung,nipple after the maf Sensor.

After, because the air you want to recirc has already been counted by the MAF. don't need to count it again.

My BOV is VTA too. Yes very loud gunshoot like backfire most commonly when its left in gear at around 3-4k rpm and just let completely off the gas..... BOOOOOOOOOOM haha. I'll recirculate mine eventually but that means buying a new valve for me. There is no recirc kit for my Apexi.

 

With my Synchronic I can still hear a subtle whisp when the BOV opens ... without the (often times) violent backfire right at the manifold... that's the one that is scary.... back fires farther back in the exhaust are far more enjoyable and often times generate cool flames.

 

I had noticed when my filter was off the other day that my MAF didnt have a screen in the front or the rear of it. Im not sure if its supposed to open like that. Had an 87 corvette with maf and it had a screen. Anyway, I was thinking (for now until i have more cash) of grabbing a hose in the diameter of the BOV and running it down the intake past the MAF as a temporary fix until i can get some welding done. what do ya'll think?

 

I know that with a regular intake, you'd want the screens to smooth the air flow before the MAF. However, we all know that the GReddy turbo intake is ****. I don't know if there is one in there or not.
My advice would be to read through the forum of other members' turbo builds and get an idea of how a proper set up should be
