I just noticed tonight when shifting from 4th to 5th gear, from 4krpms - 6krpms...I have a slight grind. I know that I havent suddenly started shifting differently...its just a slight grind. Anyone know what might be wrong?
I have 9700 miles.

 

Well, this morning on the way to work I got no grinding in any gears. I tried shifting into 5th gear at every 1k incriment (1k-2k, 2k-3k, 3k-4k, 5k-6k). What would cause a gear to grind one night...but not this morning?

 

I have a problem with 5th gear too. Its the only gear on the Rx-8 that I have ever grinded. This morning I shifted into 5th, clutch fully disengaged, and when I let out the clutch it sort of grinded and popped out. Very strange. It does not happen consistently, but about once every two or three weeks 5th will grind on me (or I on it)

 

This is the first time it's happened to me...pretty much:

<In 4th Gear>
<Press Clutch In>
<Move up to 5th>
<While moving to 5th, grinds a bit>

But like I said...it didn't do it today...and hasn't ever since I got my car last september...but did last night.

 

Update:
This evening after work...it started doing it again. I'm going to take it easy on her, and this weekend pull the tranny plug and drain the fluid and look for metal...and change my fluid (Red Line...which it currently has).

Can you please tell me exactly what it sounds like when your car grinds.

I remember on my old car (RSX-S), I grinded the gears a couple times (b/c I learned manual on that car). It was an absolute horrible noise. It was really loud, continuous and a unique noise.

What exactly does your grind sound like. It is really brief when you just shift it in. How loud is it? Do you feel friction on the shifter as your pushing in the stick?
