2004 M/T Dynamic Damper Heat Shield Replacement Recall
What's this and how long has this been out?
I know about the other two recalls for the lower arm and thermal heat fuel, but what problem is the damper suppose to cause?

Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, THE HEAT INSULATOR MAY BE CRACKED CAUSING ABNORMAL NOISE.
Consequence:
CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE CAN CAUSE THE INSULATOR TO COME OFF AND COULD POSE A HAZARD TO FOLLOWING VEHICLES.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HEAT INSULATOR. THE RECALL BEGAN MARCH 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.

I have a question on this recall that relates to drivetrain alignment, which my service guy said is critical on the M/T vehicles. The recall states that the power plant frame should be adjusted so that the distance between the bottom of the front tunnel member and the bottom of the power plant frame is 55-57mm.
I can come up with two different measurements on my vehicle. If I measure from the rear side of the front tunnel member, I get a distance that is about 3-4mm greater than if I measure from the front side of the front tunnel member. This seems to be due to a step in the frame, where there feels like there is a welded seam. Since this measurement affects the drivetrain alignment, I want to be sure it is correct, because I'm wondering if this is where my idle vibration came from (which I've had for 40K miles - ever since I had the dynamic damber recall performed). Does anyone know what the correct measurement position should be?

That's interesting... Your PDF document I assume is from the service manual? The TSB says the measurement should be between 55 and 57mm - quite a bit tighter than the original spec. I wonder if they determined the alignment was more critical than originally determined?
I don't want to take the car in if the measurement is correct - it's a logistical pain in the butt for me.

interesting..
i had not noticed the 55 to 57mm.. i know that after the motor install the tech noticed the vibration.. and i said ppf...
the adjustment was made.. and it went away, but i wonder what measurement was used.. i have a bit of a rattle in my shifter that was not there before...
btw, get under the car stick a pen through the hole. mark it and then measure it..
