2 Questions about Auto Trans Fluid

Because of what I've read here from other RX-8 owners experiences, I elected to change my Automatic Transmission Fluid and Differential Fluid at the 2k point.

I did my research and decided that I would spring for Royal Purple ATF and Gear Oil even though they were high because of the the long service interval for these fluids and the pecieved benefits many members here reported after changing to RP. I read the Owners Manual whcih does not specify any oil except JWS3309, but the Workshop manual specifies ATF M-III or equivilent (e.g. Dexron III). So I called the dealership and said that I know they wouldn't concur with me putting synthetic oil in the engine, but that I wanted to put Royal Purple MaxATF in the transmission and Royal Purple MaxGear 75W90 in the differential. They said they would research it and later called back and said "no synthetics in the engine, but those are fine for the transmission and differential.

So I order the oils, and then take the car in. I stop by two hours later because my wife is dropping off a work van for service and the service manager waves me inside. Thinking my 8 is ready (so soon?) I go in only to be told:

"We put your Royal Purple ATF in and then the parts manager showed the mechanic a tech bulletin that said that M-III or Dexron-III oils cannot be used in the RX-8 automatic transmission"

"We drained the Royal Purple back out and put the authorized fluid back in the transmission."

"The Gear Oil is fine and we did put the Royal Purple in the differential."

But evidently after you replace the auto trans fluid, you have to run the car and then let it cool to below 100 degrees to check the levels and determine if it needs more ATF. It didn't get below 100 degrees before close of business, so I'm stuck with the loaner car for the weekend until they can check the fluid levels Monday morn. And after all that, I still don't have RP in the slushbox.

The Service Manager did say that they drained the RP back into the bottles because they know how high it is.

So two questions:
1. Is the ATF M-III (Dexron-III) authorized for the 6-speed Auto-Trans per the Workshop Manual or not? The only TSB that I could find was for the Mazda6 Auto-Trans cautioning against using M-III/Dexron-III ATF (
HTML Code:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/mazda6/docs/0013.pdf
). Is the RX-8 and the Mazda6 Automatic Transmission the same box?

2. Is the RP they put in my transmission and then immediatly drained back out of the box worth a dime now? I've half a mind to just drive the car to a transmission repair place and have them put the RP back in. Otherwise I guess I'll ask around the office to see if anyone needs some 'slightly used' ATF. Is this ATF worth putting back in ANY transmission or has it just become the most expensive Automatic Transmission Flush Fluid ever used?

Sometimes if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

not only should you NOT use the Dexron its really no tgood to even mix some in. id be really leary about your tranny now if they didnt do a proper flush. that left over dexron could destroy your tranny. if they had left it in its a good possibility you would not have made it home with the trranny failing.

Hopefully the end of this saga:

The dealership drove it back in one of the high-bays for the weekend because I asked for it to not be left outside overnight (I garage it and wanted them to do the same). They checked levels and had my car back to me first thing Monday morning.

The service manager did assure me that they flushed to transmission (twice) before refilling with the Mazda authorized JWS3309 fluid (I don't know if it was the Mobil or Exxon brand). He did indicate that they recorded it in notes that they had initially authorized this fluid and they had put it in (for 20 minutes) before draining, flushing and replacing it. They assured me that my drive-train warranty was intact because it was their oversight since I had asked ahead of time it the fluid met spec. They gave me back the re-bottled RP MaxATF and offered to pay for it which I refused and indicated that I was more concerned about warranty than the cost of the oil.

I've got to say that I'm VERY happy with the dealership here in Enterprise, AL. Mitchell Mazda may not do everything perfect, but they dang sure try hard to ensure their customers are pleased with the end result. So know I'll just watch, feel, and listen closely to the transmission to see if its OK. Initial impression if good, smother shifting than before the ATF change.

On a related note, the car sounds a little throatier than before the Engine/Trans/Diff Oil changes, but I don't see how those would change the timber of the exhaust sound. May be psycosomatic with me 'expecting' better/faster/stronger performance from the oil changes.
