Burnt Coil or Clogged CAT. with the CEL on im going with glogged CAT. the octane would not make the PCM make any timing adjustments unless there was knock. Call roadside assisstance and have them TOW the car to the Dealer. they always tow to the closest one and it wont cost you a dime or any embarrassment at losing an uphill race to a yugo.

How could you bring the loaner back late since you will be bringing it back to pick up your repaired car?

I also suspect clogged cat, probably caused by an earlier flooding (prior to your ownership, of course).

Rats think RX-8 coolant hoses taste gooooood.

The Rat that Ate my 8

Better check for rat nesting materials in your airbox as well as going over all hoses and wiring to look for other signs of gnawing. Did the dealer replace your damaged hose when they replaced your cat?

Ok, I have a similar problem as above. It starts to buck under two conditions:

1. AC is on for a decent amount of time (doesn't matter what setting)
2. RPM Range is 4-6k WOT

The first time I noticed this was in last November when I had the AC pumping in bumper to bumper traffic car started to buck AND the Temp guage needle jumped to HOT. Took it in for service and I told them to check the CAT. They replaced the thermostat and said the cat was fine. Last month the same thing happened again but popped a CEL and took it in for service and they said the CEL was caused by a faulty gas cap which was replaced. What a joke. Same thing happened again 2 days ago. I am scared to go WOT with the AC. I would like to take it in again, but maybe someone else has had a similar problem with the AC on. This would be the 3rd time I take it for the same problem and I want to point these clowns in the right direction as I am wasting time. The car is absolutely perfect without AC

I am contemplating taking it to another dealership, but this dealer has great loaner cars and gives me one at every service.

I did some research from the below thread as well. TIA

Sounds like the ecu going nanny on you for high coolant temps. The needle going hot, means it's extremely hot. The ecu will pull timing like crazy for high temps, and there goes any power. The A/C on connection, lends credibility to this theory, as the car will run hotter with it on, particularly without airflow through the condensor and radiator.

Edit: btw, overheating a rotary engine can quickly lead to its failure, so I'd recommend not using the A/C until you get the problem diagnosed/fixed. If you have access to a canscan device, you can watch your coolant temp in real time.

Any ideas on what I should tell the dealership to check out? I will be going to a different dealership. Either it's not getting enough air or not enough gas. Maybe the ECU is cutting gas? BTW, they reflashed my ECU last time I was in there.

How long does it take from the time you notice the car is sluggish the the time it is so bad the dealer will replace it?

Mine has been slugish off and on for a couple months now. I took it in a few weeks ago and they replaced some plugs and re-flashed it, but said the cat was within specs. It ran fine for about 300 miles, then got sluggish again. I'll be bringing it in again soon, but want to know ahead of time if I'm noticing the beginning of the end of the cat... or if it's something else.
