EU 192HP: power loss and rattle noise above 5,000 rpm (already new ignition, new cat)

Hi guys,
my name is Tom and I am from Germany.
I have a problem with my 2005 RX-8 standard power 192 HP.
The problem startet in December 2012.

Symptoms:
- Loss of power and rattle noise above 5,000 rpm
- Problem appears when driving up hill or accelerating in 4th - 5th gear
- When driving on flat track and in 1st - 3rd gear, the car accelerates normally up to 8,500 rpm
- Video (not my car, but same symptoms):

In December 2012 I changed:
- new spark plugs (latest NGK plugs: 2x RE9B-T, 2x RE8C-L)
- new ignition coils (Mazda OEM: N3H1-18-100B-9U)
- new ignition cables (NGK Performance)
I drove about 500 km without any problems and the cars accelerates normally.

In January 2013 the symptoms recur.

In February 2013 I changed:
- new cat (HJS metal 200 cells)

But the problem is still present.

I checked the SSV valve.
I can move the SSV with my little finger.
I reved-up the engine several times when the car stands still (question: can I check the SSV using this procedure or must the car drive for SSV-switch or do I have to film the SSV during driving?)
run 1: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/Lauf1.m4v
run 2: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/Lauf2.m4v
run 3: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/Lauf3.m4v
run 4: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/Lauf4.m4v

As you can see in the Videos, the SSV does not switch steadily at the same rpms. Sometimes it does not switch.

Some other SSV-Videos:
SSV play: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/IMG_0683.m4v
SSV rattle @ idle: http://home.arcor.de/mx-3-tom/IMG_0688.m4v

So my actual assumption is:
The SSV sticks (BUT: I can move it with my little finger) or that the SSV solenoid valve is broken (bad electric plug, malfunction of the solenoid, defect negative pressure system).
Do you agree?

Another assumption is commented in the first Video (symptom video). A user writes, that he had the same problem and in his case the battery was bad.
I changed the battery in summer 2012. But it was a no-name battery (the car was driven in Greece for this time and they had not a popular make in stock).

Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help.
I begin to despair.

you have a 6 gears transmission in a car that came with a 5 gears one... this isn't a problem, just something worth mentioning.

I would check the solenoids and, if the whole intake is fine, do a compression test. Sometimes a low compression engine with a lot of blowback may let the ssv rattle. It's a rare occurrence but i saw that happen a couple of times.

Sorry, I edited my fault with the 6th gear.

I will check the solenoids asap (I will swap the pipes and the plugs of the SSV solenoid and the VDI solenoid).

A comperession test is also a good idea.
But if the compression is bad, why the car accelerated proper during 1st - 3rd gear and on flat track?

Update: The SSV solenoid works correct.

Today I cleaned the pressure pipes of the Air-Fuel-Mixing-System and the oil injectors with cleaning oil (WD-40).
I also cleaned the SSV with this oil.

I'll keep you up to date.

Hi,

since I performe Premix with 1:300, the symptoms are fixed. No rattle noise any more.

For this reason, I think there is a problem with the oil dosing unit (oil dosing valve, solenoid valve, oil dosing pump).

What do you think?

Regards, Tom

It's possible but that problem would lead to increased wear and loss of compression anyway...

Clogged oil nozzle seems to be a common problem, not just RX-8, even my FC had clogged oil nozzle. seems to fixed with S2 (with double pressure, and changed to the way it injects oil)

if adding premix solved ur problem, that means your engine is already worn out. time for a new one.

Thanks for your reply.

Premix fixed the problem, that's right.

But is the engine really worn out? Isn't it possible that only the oil nozzled are plugged?

What do you mean with "S2"?

Running without injected oil wears the engine. Clogged nozzles make you run without oil.. it's as simple as that.

OK. I understand.

The oil nozzles were plugged and due to this, the engine got worn.
But don't you think, that working oil nozzles would solve the problem, too? Because my premix is very gently (1:300).

You should do a compression test before and after to be sure

i actually have a question, i bottomed out on a rock yesterday and now my car it making a dragging/grinding noise, cant really be heard from outside the car but on the inside it sounds loud. i got under the car and can see that the heat shield was scraped pretty badly, but i looked at the transmission and it looks like it was unaffected (meaning it was not touched no marks on it) the exhaust is not loose and i cant see anything broken at all. im wondering if by pushing the heat shield into the cat could cause this noise? i have no cel on but it sounds terrible in the car mainly at lower rpms and only when driving while giving it gas, once the clutch is depressed or in neutral I can rev it and it sounds normal. Any ideas?
