I have an '04 as well. Both of my OEM keyless entry remote stopped working a year ago. Changed the battery(as you did) and reprogrammed the remotes, but neither worked; however, they both tested OK at AutoZone. If you use the "Search" you will find some posts from other '04 owners who have replaced their remote with a flip-key(bought at eBay) from a later RX-8. It has a different FCC# but worked once it's been programmed. I haven't replaced mine, it became a habit to lock and unlock my car the old way.

Is it that we can not reprogram the old ones once the batteries go bad?

I have two FOB keys, both stopped working when their batteries ran out. I tried numerous times reprogramming -followed the procedures step by step with two working car keys- one FOB at a time and it wouldn't. Checked the FOBs at Autozone and it shows that it's emitting a frequency with the new batteries.
