I'm not sure why you would bother - abbid is correct.

I don't know what the gear ratios are on the S2000 version, but it can't be too far off the '8 since they have a similar power band.

Would this possibly be a stronger tranny?

When someone tells you "they're the same exact box", that means one is stronger than the other.

Exactly. Here's the proper way to use it in a sentence:

"Your quarter mile time sucks. I'm going to show you how it's really done by posting an identical time."

Identical means better. It comes from the root words, "I'm dating identical twins."

Identical twins are often surprisingly different...

MY '8s transmission/clutch is smoother than both of my Miatas, which have the best shift feel of any vehicle ever made.
Its all in the adjustment and shifter.

I presume the trans because it is definitely not true about the twins.

Like others mentioned- it should fit and work, but is it worth it? Iwould od more research to see if the S2k trany is strong. There are some S2k's out there putting down some serious power figures- see if their tranny's go at 400-rwhp.

if they are the same then the s2000 kits ppg have would be a direct fit.
http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/default.htm

they already have a syncro and a dog engagement for the s2000

The s2k tranny is definitely much smoother and more precise than the RX-8 box. If it really is the "same box", which I really doubt, then I dunno what they did to gimp it out for the RX-8, but it's unfortunate that they did.

They switched to, I believe, CF synchros in ~2004, after the (brass? bronze?) original ones started all blowing up.

2004 and later S2000s have carbon synchros (and ratios in at least some gears different from earlier versions). But that is only a tiny bit of how the two gearboxes feel different.

The RX-8 gearbox is fine for any normal use, and for most abnormal uses. Having driven our RX-8 and our S2000 a great deal, the real difference is how precise and smooth the S2000 gearbox is (and I don't have to hunt/fight to get it into reverse in the S2000). The S2000 gearbox is often called, in car mags, the best gearbox of any production car, and I would believe it. I can't believe that they are the same box, given how incredibly different they feel.

That said, I have no idea why anyone would want to go to the trouble and expense of putting an S2000 gearbox in an RX-8, unless (i) your present gearbox is shot, and (ii) it is a relatively simple procedure (which I doubt).

By the same token, many of the mags have called the Miata gerabox the best ever made.
It is also the same Aisin A-1 Y6M transmission.

Much of the "feel" comes down to how accurate the clutch release and shift lever pivot are.

I personally wouldn't bother with it. Slide in an FD 5-speed which can handle massive abuse and call it a day

Sure it can but it's not geared right for an NA Renesis. I'd be interested to know if the S2K tranny is a straight bolt up. Mine's shot to shizzle.
