Yeh, it's inbuilt as part of the fuel pump unit in the gas tank.

The FPU is muy expensivo, BTW. If and when mine expires, I'll build my own with a Walbro pump.
You can, however, clean the OEM filter a few times before it totally degrades.

Hey Expo - The Beetlejuice pic in your sig rocks! Where did that happen?

The FPU is 200.00 or so and the gasket is a 60.00 rubber band. Big deal.

$200 would be a great price. Last I looked it up, the wholesale price was $650.

If you go to the merchandise section his site http://www.jollydwarf.com/ he will take a photo with a custom sign for $20.00.

As for the cleaning the OEM filter part of your post don't you need a special tool to get it out? If you do what would you clean it with? I am going to hit 100,000 by Sept and might just do that.

Yes you do need the SST to get the retaining ring off but especially to get it back on. I've done 4 now and it's not a big deal with a couple of caveats. Don't bother trying to clean the filter, it's nothing more than a flat tampon. Wiring to the sending unit is very flimsy and can be chaffed when removing the pump (ask Trackaddict) other than that it's easiest with a very nearly empty tank. The pump itself looks like a Japanese version of a Walbro. I personally think Walbro pumps suck even though the price is right and I am running one in the LS1 powered rx7 which Oh by the way is now making 440/409 at the wheels. I think they suck due to the fact that they might last 10 minutes, ten days, or ten years. I've seen all three but Nippondenso rules in consistency.

i have a fuel pump and the gasket I can sell. pm if interested. By the way our pump is a 220 gallon/ pump. Dont let the tank get below 1/4 as the pump runs consistantly at high speed if you do. Our pumps are prone to failure. They can mantain pressure but not volumne after a while. if you ever have a fuel starvation issue---change your pump--unless you are unmodified and drive street only. Then you probably would be ok.
Chas --I have a contact at Denso if you ever need it.
I will be doing an exploratory laparotomy on Silver's old pump soon--try and see how the internal filter held up.

but isnt that all pumps will fail ?

Just joking buddy joking :P

Hmm , Damn, for the first 20K miles. I almost ALWAYS wait until the gas light comes up. I must've damaged it alot

how much do they sell them ? 650 wholesale price? Dang, How much for *retail* then ? O_O

I saw some *pump upgrades* from Mazsport. is it worth it for street car ? and I think is kinda pain in the *** to replace the fuel pump (have to take the seat out)

its not good to ever let the gas get lo in any car but on the 8 with the dual tanks and siphon dependent it probably is a little worse.
actually our pumps are not difficult to change, compared to some other cars in which the tank has to be dropped.
I have heard from other nuts about plenty of other cars and trucks with fuel pump issues at 30 --40k miles.

100.50 thats it ? Damn I wanna join Mazda motor sports program, but I think I need 2 race results in order to get in (I think the closest track to NYC is like 2-3 hour drive, I dont even remember the name, I have to ask expo1)

133.96 @ onlinemazdaparts.com

phew .... at first I was like WOW 600 something ?!

damn then ... if its just 100. I might as well change mine when I reach ..... 35 or 40K miles (if its dying, or showing problems) , why ? because I almost always refill only when the light shows up.

I looked at the service manual and it seems that I have to take the rear seat out to remove it. Is it hard to replace the pump myself ?
