What kind of differential does the RX have?
As I understand it, they came standard with LSDs, if not, I know that my car has one nonetheless. I always assumed they were Torsens, which are what the first and second generation Miatas came with, and which have a very good reputation. A couple of days ago, someone gave me the impression that they weren't, Torsens, and implied that they weren't very good, but didn't elaborate on what they were. I've autocrossed and tracked with whatever it is that's under there, and like it just fine. I have a Torsen in my Miata, and they are equally competent. So, what do we have?

It comes from a different manufacturer(some people call them ToFu; I forgot the full name), but it still is considered a Torque Sensing LSD.
The difference seems to be that the RX-8 LSD doesn't utilize worm gears like Torsen ones. It uses a cone clutch that's supposedly more durable.
That said, I just read this info out of curiosity. I am by no means a diff pro.

Tochigi Fuji is the manufacturer.
It's advertised as a torque sensing unit but not a TorSen(tm) unit.

It's got cone clutches that will wear out over time like a clutch-type LSD but won't explode as easily due to shock loads like a gear-type LSD.

nope, plain GL-5 75W-90 or 75W-140.
Yes, it does have friction material and does wear out. Odds are, people that only drive on the street won’t wear it out very quickly and won’t notice when they do.
