What fixes have you applied to your car?
I have an early VIN vehicle and had the following fixes preformed.
- Snapping Noise When Turning <-- (Had this fixed before their was a TSB)
- New Oil Pan and Sensor
- Manual Transmission Dynamic Damper Recall 1704B
- Front Passenger Side Air Bag Recall 1604B
- "L" Calibration PCM Reflash - (N3H6 18 881L)
- Front Cup Holder / Center Console Becomes Hot <-- Insulation Pad ordered.

I've got almost 3k miles so far, purchased in 12/03. Other than that, it's been great so far... even my mileage is up after the 'L' flash.

Did you have a CEL to get your reflah done and did you have a difficult time with the Mazda dealership here in SF? I would like to get the reflash, but I have never had a CEL.
I need the Airbag and Tranny Damper sorted out so I was hoping to get the L flash as well.

Hi murix, I did not have a CEL, I posted this letter in a couple of other threads, it seemed to work for me...

Updating RX-8 Power train Control Module – (PCM) to the latest “L” calibration (N3H6 18 881L):

The latest “L” calibration leans out Air/Fuel Ratio in many places in the RPM range, as well as retarding timing to prevent pinging that has been reported to cars in areas that are hot, humid or at sea level. This leaning of the AFR will also improve fuel economy which is my main concern. I have been keeping strict records of all my fill-up’s and over the course of xxxxxx miles and have averaged only xx.x MPG on mixed driving. My car is definitely running pig-rich; exhibits immediate tail pipe carbon build-up and rough idle when cold.
I’m requesting this latest PCM reflash be applied to my car because the mileage is unacceptable given that the EPA has given this car 18-24 MPG rating.
*Attached: The following TSB (Clearing Eccentric Shaft Plate Profile Memory) explains yet another circumstance in which flashing to the “L” calibration is a good idea.

I got :

to have to talk them into it but they just said "OK" I had no CEL and didn't have to give them a reason - Sweet!
It idles more smoothly now- may have a little better low end
torque? Hopefully mileage will improve too.

Had the oilpan done by my dealer (without even telling me he was doing it) about 4 months ago. Last service had the airbag and damper recalls done as well as the flash to L. Other than that I have a new LCD controller on order and a sidesill to replace th4e one that came unglued and got bent.

Some customers may complain of the front cup holder area of the center console becoming hot after extended driving, causing cold drinks to warm. Due to the heat from the exhaust system (catalyst), the center console (cup holder area) becomes hot. This is due to insufficient insulation between the floor panel N cup holder. A insulation pad is available to reduce the heat transfer to the center console. 1. Remove the upper panel, hole cover (cigar lighter) and storage box from the vehicle. (See WSM 9-17-8) 2. Remove the six screws from the upper panel and remove the rear console. (See WSM 9-17-8,9) 3. Attach the heat insulator pad to the bottom of the front cup holder in the rear console removed at the above step #2. NOTE: Be sure to attach the heat insulator pad so that the bottom of the cup holder is wrapped. 4. Re-install the parts reverse order of removal. Parts information: F151-55-161 Heat insulator pad

"L" Flash (mileage seems to be up)
I brought in the latest TSB concerning Flooding and told them I wanted it applied. The didn't give me any trouble about doing the flash.

Rattling from passenger seat belt retractor - replaced
New oil pan and sensor
Groaning driver's seat - fixed
Leaking brake master cylinder - new seal kit
Goobers at dealer gouged wheels - refurbished
Rattling in driver's side rear door - fixed
Rust on rotors - refinished

Rattling in mirror - attempted fix
Airbag recall
Dynamic Dampener recall
Center console broiler (cupholder) insulation pad
Pilot bearing noise - dealer claims it's "normal operation"
L reflash - hopefully...
I'm starting to think they built my car at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon...

I scheduled an appointment to have the recall work done this week. I mentioned L flash, he said that they just got one in but they won't flash it just to flash it, you have to state a problem, I said like rough idle, he said exaclty.

My 8 is in the shop now for the recalls and oil pan. I asked them to do the L reflash and fix the cupholder/hot plate. Dealer said they would look into it (I furnished a copy of the cupholder fix). The mechanic said the only major problems he has seen so far is a cat converter that got stopped up and had to be replaced. Can anyone who has had the insulation pad installed tell a difference in the muffin warmer?

Got my 8 back today. 2 days is not so bad I guess. They had all the parts they didn't have in stock overnighted to them. Both recalls, oil pan, eng cover grommets, cup holder insulation pad and the L reflash were all done. I checked the reflash with the brake pedal tap and it worked so now I should be set. Can definitely tell a difference in the pickup. It is much smoother during pick up through the gears and no longer has the "kick in" feeling it had before. I kinda miss the kick but maybe it will get a little better mpg (I already get 17 in town). Hopefully the muffin warmer will not be quite so hot now on trips.
