Weird noise please help

My 04 8 has about 78k and i just recently started to notice that there is a weird noise during idle and during light acceleration (1-3.5rpm). It seems to be coming from the transmission because when i press the clutch in, even just a little, the noise stops. I am aware of the regular transmission noise that our transmissions have but it seems as though there might be something loose, sounds like a metallic rattle/whine. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or might now what it might be.
Thanks

Crawl under the dash and take a look at the large bracket that supports the clutch panel assembly. There have been quite a few failures of spot welds on that bracket and if your bracket is failing, you might get a vibration from the "loose" pieces.

Also do a search for clutch bracket and read the main thread dealing with this problem.

Edit: Here's a link to the thread. It's a long thread, but if you read it all you will see what I'm referring to.

I have the same issue. It actually happens when the clutch is fully let out, even when in gear, it is just harder to hear. If you drive down a back alley with garage's on each side you will hear it. Mine sounds like a belt squeaking, and like yours when you press the clutch in even just an inch, the sound goes away. I think most people believe that it is the throwout bearing. Some people have tried to tell me that it is normal but i know that it isn't, it is clearly audible and i think that it is getting worse.

I've not had this problem in my RX8, but from the description it sounds like throwout bearing noise.

the throwout bearing is active when the clutch is in.. could be, but not likely.

it could be pilot bearing, gear rollover, input shaft.. and a few others.

Im having the same exact problem.

It wasnt there before, and its there now. I dont really understand how people can call it normal.

The sound is definatly there when the clutch is let out, while driving or stoped in neutral.

If you press the clutch in even an inch, it stops.

Sound like tranny to me.

I'm bringing it in next monday for this and 4-5 other little things, I'll see what the dealership says.

Let me know what the dealership says when you bring it into them. I'm wondering if this is something that could possibly be covered under warranty?

my car sounds like that, when i'm parked, i put the car in neutral and if the clutch is not pressed, i could hear this rattle noise, and as soon as i press the clutch the noise calms down. When i'm driving it and i change gears i can hear it too, it has a very deep sound, inside the car when i'm driving it kinda shakes a little, what should i do??

Does anyone know if this could be the cause of bad tranny mounts? I think I have the same problem on my AT, so that is why I ask. I know when the engine mounts were replaced, the the rattle and shaking in the front went away, so it seems like something very similar possibly with the tranny.

Ok, it could be, I'm gonna take it to the dealer and see what they say, most likely they won't do anything 'cuz they don't wanna lose money, but I'll see what I can do, thanks anyways... I'll let you all know what my problem was as soon as I fix it...

Well i don't think that your issue is a throwout bearing because it is more of a squeaking sound and is easily drowned out while moving. In any case i talked to another club member that had the throwout bearing replaced and he said that it cost him mid 300's to fix. The throwout bearing itself is only 30 bucks it is the labor that kills

The throwout bearing is only in use when the clutch is in so if the noise goes away when the clutch is in then it's NOT your throwout bearing.

My car has the same noise and it's had it for 50K miles. It is normal. I know it sounds weird but it's the way our transmissions are.

I also have a weird noise, and as mentioned above, if your driving down the road you really cannot hear it much, but go in between two garages or two sound barriers and you can hear it clear as day. Mine sounds metallic in origin. I have opened my hood up with the car running to try to figure out where it was coming from, i really couldn't isolate much but it sounded as though it was coming from the air intake or below it (most likely below it). I have asked mazda about it many many times and they say they run tests on it, and that the noise is normal. I call BS on that noise being normal in any fashion of the word, because it will get worse at time if i have driven the car for long distances, it is worse then if i just drive it around town for an hour or so.

I live in tallahaseee, fl. I drove from here to fort bragg, NC. After the trip when i started the car, the noise was HELL of alot more distinct. You could here it even through the engine running. Once back I only drove my car to work for 1 day and had not used it for about 4 days. Once back in the car, the noise returned to it's normal rattle / whatever the hell it is. I know that noise wasn't there when I bought the car so I will argue with anyone who says that it's a normal noise.

^^That sounds different than the transmission noise.

If you think it's coming from below the intake check to make sure your intake pin grommets are all still in place in the intake pan. Constant removal and replacement of the airbox can push these rubber grommets through and they can get wedged in the radiator fan making noise and burning out your fan motor.

I know that a slight noise is normal but mine squeaks like a belt is loose or something. It is to the point when i am sitting in neutral that the sound is embarrassing.

Other rx8's that i have heard are not loud to the point that mine is.

That's also a different noise. Your belt may be loose.

I don't think that it would be a belt because if i push the clutch in even a inch the squeak completely goes away. I took it to the dealership once but they didn't know what it was. I might take back and just get the throwout bearing replaced. Either that or get a whole new light flywheel and clutch put in.

Hmm. Well that's different than the "regular" noise. It's more of a metallic rattle. Again if it goes away when you push in the clutch then your throwout bearing is FINE. It's only working when the clutch is pushed in.

Could be clutch flywheel interface or transmission input shaft. I've never heard of a squeak coming from the clutch and flywheel interface though and don't know how that would happen.
