Upgrade 2004 rx8 key to flip key ?

Ok I know this issue has been beat to death but I have a few questions that I couldn't find on my own. I have an 04 rx8 that I bought used. I only received one key and no FOB remote when I bought it . My question is I know the 41787 FCC id key will program to the doors and locks but do I have to have a remote with the car already to do it ? I know Im going to have to take the key to a locksmith to have it programmed so the key will start the car , but do I need an existing remote with me to program the buttons ? Thanks for the help

No, you do not need an existing remote. Once the switchblade/flip key is programmed using TWO other keys, the remote is programmed with the switchblade/flip key via Mazda's instructions found in the thread that has been beat to death.

I bought a switchblade blank and used my two master keys (black head) to program the switchblade (once it was cut, obviously) and then, with the newly programmed switchblade key in the ignition, programmed the remote via Mazda's instructions.

I'm not sure, but since it only cost $1 to get the key cut and 30 seconds to program it, why do you want to program the remote first?

It's easier to program the FOB keyless entry remote which only require one working key to be used. However, as stated by both ncygps and RickA, two working keys(one can be the valey key) is required to program the transponder in that new key for it to start the car. Also, make sure that the new key will work to open both the door and the trunk.

Here is the summary of everything (everyone) needed to know:

The valet key definitely works as part of coding -- just don't use it to cut your new key. And you do not need an existing FOB. They all get re-registered when you follow the specific procedure for them... again, documented above.

If you don't have 2 keys already that will unlock/start the car you will have to get the new key cut (anywhere can cut the key so it unlocks the door) AND you will have to get it programmed so it will start the car. You can get the programming done at a dealership or at select locksmiths.

Once you have those 2 programmed you can program another.

If your FOB goes bad you don't need any working ones to program the new one. All you need is ONE functioning key (fully functioning, unlocks and starts car). Use that key and follow the procedure to program the FOB.

If you have an '04 you CAN buy the switchblade FOB with FCC ID: KPU41788. It will program correctly.

I hope this is a reasonable summary for those reading the thread.

I got mine cut at an Ace Hardware, conveniently they had a sign that proudly proclaimed "WE CUT CODED KEYS" which I've never noticed before haha
