With the problems that we have concerning the need to let the car warm up, before we can shut it off, I thought of maybe coming up with a reverse turbo timer. My idea would be a little unit designed to keep the car running until it reached a certain temperature. I called Greddy about this, but the guys I spoke with said they would not do something like this. I'm sure that the temperature sending unit either sends out a certain voltage, or has a certain amount of resistance, which is what the gauge reads and displays accordingly. I should imagine someone could design something to keep the ignition turned on, without the key in it, until it "sees" a predetermined voltage/resistance, at which time it would shut the ignition off. This would work on short trips, moving the car, etc. As much as we love to drive our cars, we don't always have time to let them run. Just thought I'd post this to get some feed back so I know if it'd be worthwhile trying to find a company to do this for me.

 

I have searched the threads and found folks mentioning buying turbo timers, but no one has posted a DIY or success story.

Has anyone successfully installed a turbo timer? Is there a trick to keeping the engine running while the security system is armed?

 

I remeber somebody posting they had a shop put one in and it worked. He had the unit installed right below the cd player. Also, they had to have an extra key wired and hidden.
A DIY or more info would be great.

 

A turbo timer could help in the case of "flooding" shut downs.

 

I searched thru a bunch of threads but couldn't find a confirmed installation. Did they happen to mention how they wired it up? Does it work with the system armed?

Unfortunantly, everyone in that thread had, or was going to have a turbo installed in their car, which means he actually needed the timer to function normally. What I'm talking about would have the same theory behind the timer's operation, just reversed. You're absolutley right about the whole preventing it from flooding issue, it would only be used for short drives where the engine doesn't have time to fully warm up.

Excellent news! Which timer are you using? How did you wire it?

 

I used to work at a stereo shop installing remote starters among other things. Don't be confused by the name. Yes they can start the vehicle, but they can also keep it running for a preset amount of time. Just hit the button before you get out and your car would continue running for 7/15/30 minutes are all usual increments. 7 would be most suited. You of course would get the added benefit of having a remote starter as well! You do need to permanently install a key under the dash though.

 

^hehe permanently installing a key under teh dash makes it pretty easy to steal. it's like the system is never on then isn't it?

 

regarding using a remote start, you can use it to act as a turbo timer in the 8, and you shouldnt need to use an extra key if all you were doing was using it as a cool down/warm up mode after the vehicle was already running, the only time you would need to use the extra key would be to start the car remotely....though you should be wary of installing it to do the starting if you are driving an 8 with a manual transmission, as if you leave it in gear and try to start it, it may try to take off on you, which would be a really bad thing.................

are you sure? the car will notice if the key is not in...i woudl hate for it to disable my engine.

 

i havent had a chance to install my remote start system as yet, but usually in a vehicle with a "chipped" key, what happens is when you go to start the car, the vehicle's computer looks for the key in the ignition. as long as the correctly coded key is in the ignition when you first start the vehicle, then you are fine.

in my experience installing remote starters, this has always been the case, once the proper key has been verified, the vehicle doesnt bother looking to make sure that that key is still there
