Transmission Rebuild (Syncro issue)

Anyone done a transmission rebuild on the 8?

I just purchased an 05' 6spd 6 days ago. It has 35,000 miles and suffers from a slight bump (when warm) as it goes into 2nd. When it's cold and you are rolling you can almost forget about 2nd gear until it has had time to warm up. I also have a rough time getting reverse to happen when it is warm (shifts in like butter when it is cold)...

The dealer has her all warmed up and ready to go when I tested the car. I had driven about 4 hours to see it so letting it sit over night to cool off and driving it at dawn wasn't really on my mind.

I assume that syncros are a common issue with the 8's since they shift around at 9k rpm sometimes so I'm just curious how most have gone about deling with this issue.

Thanks to all

I seem to be facing a syncro issue as well my only problem happens when my car is warmed up 4th gear gets a little sticky above 5-6grand I not to worried yet, but this all started affter I changed my tranny fluid to Royal Purple I am thinking about going back to OME tranny fluid to see if that helps.

Requires special tools such as trans gear pullers and a press, stuff most people don't have

there's a separate 6 spd trans service manual, it will show you everything

get that RP fluid out of there, most people have problems with it, try Redline MT90

how much cost change syncros?

i have the same problem... over 8k rpm i cant pass from second to third gear easily

in cold, the first gear and second is likely imposible without pull it with strength

i have the car in the extension of warranty (4th year of 5) and i dont know if it possible to get a complete transmission change

i would think if you guys are 35k/ under warranty the dealer should take care of this.

if you are not covered, i wouldnt recommend doing the rebuild unless you have a place/tools/time and have experience rebuilding trannies. it's somewhat of an art.

for what it's worth, they sell the complete tranny rebuilt here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/8-trans.htm

i know jasper does rebuilt transmissions as well, it might even be cheaper

mazdamatrix also has some of the parts and tools on your page to do it yourself

they can probably get whatever parts you need

the cost to replace each syncro aint easy if u dont know what ur doing, mine went bad and after doing the math , i ended with a great deal on a 08 tranny with 17,000 miles on it for $500, i saw them ******* take it out cause i sure was gonna get pissed if they sold me the other tranny jejejee, but i'm sure you can get a great deal on a used tranny with low mileage, from the looks of it i can say the previous owner nailed and floored that car like if it was stolen by the tranny only having 35k on it... pm me if your looking for a good used tranny i can refer you to the same place i got mines Pam's Auto :-)

Try double clutching.
And then heel-toe double clutch down shift...
Piece of cake.

Well, Royal Purple MaxGear is what I used once. Horrible fourth gear grind, had to shift below 5k when going to 4. But I soon changed it out to BG SyncroShift II (https://secure.buschurracing.com/cat...roducts_id=825).

When I did my clutch, this BG sh*t was so valuable to me that I drained it into a bowl, placed it in the fridge, yeah I know..., and reused it topping off with some Pennzoil Synchromesh - but just a little of it.

Anyway, I'm still using this BG fluid and I consistently redline at 94 miles per hour (my 3rd gear cut off speed) on the freeway every day back from work. And no grind at all, though I always have this hidden feeling that I'll get a grind, but it never happens!

I recommend BG SynchroShift II.

But whatever you use, yes, please get Royal Purple Max Gear out of your car.

I was qouted about $4200 maybe but he say he may can get it down lower to about $2000 or less depnding how much parts cost for haveing bad bearing and forks and etc.. Right now with my engine being built I just can't see paying for a transmission rebuild that's over $1000 right now. I can trust my engine builder but a trasmission that's has protential problem idk

Tore down the transmission and synchros were shot and forks were bent. Was quoted $2k to have transmission rebuilt. Decided to buy a brand new 2009 transmission for $1,800 and then add $1,200 for labor.

Mazmart had this 'special' pricing for 2 units last year. Not sure how much they are now.

Does the '09 gearbox go straight into the previous gen cars? If so, this is the way to go as it is a far improved box.

The dealer just called today to let me know that the regional manager has authorized a replacement gearbox for my '06.

I'm going to do the clutch at the same time just to eliminate that as a potential issue.

New gearbox (not rebuilt) is in the car along with a new factory clutch setup....and you know what? The thing still shifts like it has no synchros. I'm going to put some more miles on it, then put in some Redline Ultra Lightweight Shockproof gear lube, and see if it helps.

I put the stuff in my F355 transaxle, and the results were nothing short of miraculous. Seriously, it was a complete night and day change. I'm hoping for the same with the RX8.

I haven't been able to downshift into 2nd without double clutching for a while now...but I barely do anymore highway driving so I don't mind. Maybe one of these days I'll get it fixed

I'm having issues with shifting into 2nd gear from 1st over 6kRpms. All it does is grind. Would this be because of the Sync? Thanks.
