hello fellow rx8 people, I have looked and looked on here for an AT tranny fluid change that is specific to my model rx8. Sadly nothing is like mine, I just want to do a DIY trans fluid change and want to make sure that i will go about this the right way. First i will say that my 07 8 has NO transmission fluid dipstick at all, and my transmission looks a lot different then other pics i have seen around the internet. The pic is from driver side view, the bolt on the very right i am certain is the drain plug, the blot in the middle is a plug that says "check" on it, it uses an allen wrench and is impossible to loosen without twisting the allen, then the bolt above the gas lines on the left is the fill plug. Am i right with this?

Moved to Tech, DIY is for sets of instructions. When you have it figured out, if you want to write a DIY, then it would go there.

 

You have an OE 6 speed, are you sure you where not looking at a 4 speed DIY.

The 6 speed auto does not have a dip stick, it has an overfill hole, which you located, this is used to put new fluid in, the old fluid is drained only by dropping the pan ( A PITA and a messy one at that)

Well id like to no have to drop the pan at all costs, the plug all the way to the right has to be a drain plug? And according to the pdf file it shows that the plug on the left above the 2 lines is the fill plug?

 

Im not sure, I do know a drain plug would likely never be oriented on a horizontal surface, they are all usually vertical. And the 5 mins I spent searching for you, 3 different threads said you have to drop the pan, including one coming from a Mazda tech.

FYI you are also looking at about 100 bucks for enough fluid to fill this thing back up, and a new gasket for the pan, when you eventually drop it.

 

i have read on other threads that you have to drop the pan, but that's why i was asking cause it seems there is a drain plug. Anyway i have the 3 quarts of new transmission you think that is enough to fill just the pan back up?

 

Probably going to need at least 7 more.

Your Manual will clearly inform you that the fill qty is 9.2 quarts.

Im pretty sure your Manual will also instruct you on how to do this operation

 

Take it to a Transmission shop, they will do a complete flush which removes all of the fluid, including the 2 litre's or so in the converter, you could do this yourself but you dont sound smart enough.

 

Get a little electeic oil pump and u will be able to get it all out in no time, man i love those!

 

auto trans drain plugs are in fact almost always facing down, like in the picture.

 

Reply to karack, yes I am pretty sure it is a drain plug also, if it is not then what would It be? Anyway I don't want to do a complete flush I really just want to drain the pan and fill back up the pan with new fluid, no flush

 

If you don't do a flush their is no point in doing it. You will mix new fluid with old and end up with the same crappy fluid.

Do it right or don't waste your time.
