After reading some posts about transmission noises and trouble between first and second I was having both problems and scheduled it for service. Before I could get it in for service I lost fifth gear. When they inspected it they said the fluid as burnt and were going to replace the tranny

 

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Based upon you losing 5th gear, are we to assume you have a manual tranny?

I've smelled automatics that have had burnt fluid, but never have heard of a manual tranny having a burnt fluid smell. Please make sure to keep us posted on what you hear.
