TPMS Indicator Light Blinking

YES I CHECKED THE TIRES.

According to the RX8 manual the TPMS light would only blink if there is a malfunction in the system. They also list a few reasons why it would blink.. none of them apply to me except these two:

l When there is equipment or a device
near the vehicle using the same radio
frequency as that of the tire pressure
sensors.

l When using the following devices in
the vehicle that may cause radio
interference with the receiver unit.
l A digital device such as a personal
computer.
l A current converter device such as a
DC-AC converter.

I recently installed a carpc a little under a month ago. This problem however only started 3 days ago. It will start blinking after about 10 minutes. Key off and restart will clear it.. but only for ~10 minutes. If it was really associated with the carpc why didn't it manifest itself sooner? and why doesn't anyone else have this problem.. i know i'm not the only one with a setup like this.

any ideas? naturally, i'll take it to the dealer eventually.. just wanted to avoid the trip if it was something obvious i should look for.

Had similar results on a road trip a couple weeks back. It intermitantly blinked and stopped for the better part of 1,400 miles.

At some point, I checked tire pressure. Had all but one of my tires at 32 psi. One was 33. I dropped the pound out of the high one, tapped on all the sensors a couple times for good measure (ol' faithful bang on it general purpose fix), it blinked the next time I drove for about 5 minutes and the little sucker has remained off since.

I'm a 04 so I figure that has something to do with. I'll probably replace them with new ones when I cycle off winter tires next Spring for good measure.

Mine never beeped. It's my understanding (from the manual) that it's when the light is solid that you've got a real problem. blinking is basically loss of communication to one or more sensors... too bad they don't throw a cell for the specific tire... that'd be helpful, no doubt.

Forgot to mention, I run a UMPC (eeepc 701 w/ GPS), previously using a 200W inverter and more recently a 12V cig lighter adapter.... light stopped blinking while still using the 200W inverter.

okay.. so the light went off for a few days but it has come back.

now sometimes it will actually illuminate when I turn the car on and beep.. i turn the car off and it's gone.. or it will randomly come on other times.

it periodically still does the flashing deal..

regardless, I fear this may have something to do with it..

my car is sagging to the left.. my rear left wheel is much more tucked in then the rear right wheel. I can fit nearly 3 fingers into the rear right wheel well and can barely fit 2 in the rear left. (i am not lowered)

it's a very noticeable when you look at it.. i'll take pics tomorrow.

it looks like my strut crapped out or something.

one (or more) of your tire pressure sensors inside your wheels are failing intermittently, they aren't the most reliable piece of equipment apparently, I had to replace one on mine already. Blinking tpms sensor light DOES mean a communication failure between the main ECU and the sensors

mazda dealer DOES have equipment to identify which sensor is failing, btw.

yes i agree....and if it stays on as long as u know the pressure is good then WTF>.....uh,...if u got aftermarket wheels they people probably didnt install the TPMS correctly...if its like 40f or colder they stay on.,, the TPMS have to be at a certain temperature to work...

no,

the tpms are likely working fine.. you have to understand that temp changes tire pressure..

is it that hard to check the cold tire pressure? it is in the owners manual.

I started this thread 2 1/2 months ago!

Anyway, it did in fact turn out that my psi on 2 tires was extremely low after further checking.. the light had a reason to be on!

It was screwing up my mpg.. i was somewhere in the 13mpg range.. now back to my -normal- 16mpg. It even gave me vibrations at low rpm, I was going to take it in to the dealer to have my transmission checked out for it. Fixing psi fixed those 2 problems.

edit; and last time I went to Wayne Mazda the service writer threatened to void my 'engine warranty' for my carpc using the obd2 port.

^but the sensor is read throuh the pcm....mine has blinked beforeand no car pc for me!...double check your psi then let us know what it is and we'll go from there!....ALWAYS check the easiest thing first....i.e. tire pressure in all 4 wheels....

I was smoking crack when I suggested a link between inverters and tpms... everyone else here knows that due to my lifelong crack addiction...
