Your questions are excellent. I would recommend it being left to someone who is experienced myself because small mistakes can have huge consequences.

You should get the workshop manual unless someone is willing to provide the step by step for you. Have you changed one or two thermostats before?

It's the top hose (Exits the engine) that connects to the thermostat housing. Thermostat orientation is important and filling procedure is critical.

If you still want to do it yourself I will let others guide you in the minor details.

Best of luck.

Paul.

Yes i recommend having a mechanic replacing thermostat... its a pretty tough job, also might as well replace water pump, belts, radiator hoses while your at it. My radiator blew so i decided to do a whole cooling system upgrade, it was not an easy task. I had to removed the front bumper, under splashguard, bumper support, battery, air pump, intake, and more... lol make sure to get some baggies and a marker half the engine bay is basically being removed.

Would you advise to retaining the original thermostat when changing out the coolant pump? I'm planning to upgrade to a REmedy coolant pump in the Spring and was thinking I would replace the hoses and thermostat. Are you meaning that the failure rate of the thermostat is so low that it isn't worth replacing unless you have positively identified a failure?

that's pretty much how u take the thermostats out BUT the Air pump and it's housing will be totally in your way. you have to at least remove the top part and not remove the tube, you might be able to wee the thermostats housing out (That's what I did)

the official way is to remove the tube totally, the other end is connected to ur exhaust manifold (somewhere down there) PITA to get to.

well, replacing Thermostat is a good maintenance thing to do. but I wouldn't do it more than once every 60 K miles or so.

why is this **** in the DIY part of the forum anyway ?

One of the nipples for my radiator broke so I need a radiator. And ive been seeing different threads saying that it would be a good thing to change the water pump and thermometer while changing the radiator. I live in Louisiana, it gets pretty hot so I just wanted to baby my car a little bit.

If it's still the OEM waterpump you could change it to a new one. They do wear out. Same with the thermostat

Check out Mazmart..they have lower opening thermostats and waterpump with upgraded impellers

So the stock parts are not adequate for driving with a heavy foot in high temps? Are the Mazmart parts mainly for non stock builds? BTW thanks for the help, means a lot.
