Thank You For Tips On Changing Plugs!!
Thank to all of you Rx8 folks posting out there!!!!
All of the information you shared was great and made this first time rotary owner one happy r8er.
I had 41k on my 8 and was appalled to learn that the dealer wanted 325 bucks for the job plus another dead kite flyer for the plugs. The service manual calls for new plugs at 37.5k and after reading how performance can tail off when plugs have miles on them I felt I had to do it myself to break my rotary cherry and save a few dead presidents.
After reading many threads I figured this sounds pretty easy enough and Ive done them on all of my piston autos.
Jacking up the car and removing the drivers side wheel was the trick Very very easy to access the plug. Using a jointed socket also kept all at the proper angle.
I had all four plugs out and gapped/neverseized/replaced in 20 minutes.....This was probably the easiest of all cars Ive owned....well maybe except that old Pinto I had back in the mid seventies....
Got the NGK's at Advance Auto for 19.99 each.
Like many have said, my 8 now runs at a more stable idle and nice acceleration improvement. Like new!
After 41k plugs were quite clean but the iridium tips were diminished in size. I was surprised to find that the plugs were very easy to take out and thought that these may not have been torqued properly at the factory or dealer. Only minimal effort was required to unseat the plug and back out. Also, wires on the leading plugs didn't appear to be fully pressed onto the plugs so there definitely could have been some bad contact
So - new the 8 has got a new spark and it is quiet and stable at idle and very strong at the 5k rpm level.
Thank you to all of the contributors on this! Many thanks!
