Test: RX-8 v.s Mustang

I know, I know.. I didn't buy the RX-8 to drag race. I just wanted to race a Mustang to gauge where the HP is on the RX-8. By the way, this was done on a private road. My friend’s mustang is a 96 4.6L 5speed stang /w headers, mid-pipe, and flowmasters. His weight is about 180lb. He had a passenger that weights about 115-120lb. My RX-8 is a touring /w ~1200 miles on the clock and I weigh 170lb, tcs and dsc were off. We ran the cars twice from 0-80mph and it was a dead heat each time. We couldn't run them from a role since the road was too short. If the RX-8 would be at 247hp it should have walked him easily. I have a date with the dyno on Sept 13th. I hope Mazda has a solution to this HP issue by then.

There is no way that a stock RX-8 should be able to "easily" walk away from a V8 Mustang with those mods. His car in stock form is within spit'n distance of the RX-8 (per C&D 9/95)

Mustang / RX-8
0-60 = 6.6 / 5.9
0-80 = 11.3 / 10
1/4 = 15.1 / 14.5

I've owned 2 post '94 Mustang GTs and the mods he has performed free up several horses on those big V8s. I would have expected someone to be a little upset by the results...but not you!

Next time, do it right. Race him 0-100mph and then back to 0 again and see who wins.

I expected to be even or a little quicker than the Mustang. I ran against the same car with my FD a while back and it was plain UGLY for him. I just hope that my 8 finds it's missing ponies soon. I'll be auto-x'ing within a few weeks. I can't wait to do a lap with the traction control on. I'm just amazed by it. I've taken corners at insane speeds and I can't belive how quickly this car recovers. It feels even more solid than my FD.

Unhappy

Try a V6 ATX Mustang vs ATX RX-8.

Sadly, it'd probably be a close one.
