TX Tear down of a Mazda Reman with 22k on it

Houstonrx8er and I pulled and tore down this engine for a local guy. It is a Mazda reman with 22,000 miles on it. Here are a few quick cell pics. The rear housing had decent compression and looked ok. This is the front.

A little duct tape and it'll be fine.

That's one ugly rebuild.

Is it the spring that caused all that damage?

That would tend to make for poor compression

What did it eat?

was the corner seal missing to?
2 faces scared like that---dang
its another picture with evidence of how much the combustion gasses get by the side seals too. The buildup actually look as heavy on the side of the rotor as on the combustion front.
did he have a turbo?

Typical for a Mazda reman. I have seen this on three failed Mazda remans so far. Pretty shitty.

Not sure exactly, the apex seal broke/fell out.

Apex seal from what we saw. Many pieces.

Corner seals were there, the kid drove it this way for a bit which is what made it far worse. How it drove at all is amazing but according to Houstonrx8er it sounded like a diesel.

Random local who just graduated from A&M and moved back into town. He PM'd and asked for help since funds are tight so he employed us to pull it and tear it down. We were looking to rebuild it for him if possible but his budget is only $2500.00 and that just isn't happening.

We really didn't bother investigating the carnage further since we don't know what the owner is going to do at this point.

Me? Premium always. My car is running fine, just planning for the future. No matter how safe I play it, the more I tune myself the more dangerous it gets

MMmm, thanks for posting/doing.

I wonder if the Apex Spring was installed upside down?.

The amount of sealer/gunk used tells me more about the attitude of the re-builder.

Apparently at the reman plant in Virginia they have gone bat **** crazy with the application of RTV. The rear rotor housing had quite a bit of carbon build up for only 22k as well. The car is an absolute mess and the oil filter was a brand I have never seen or heard of so we can only surmise that maintenance was not a top priority.

That's what happened to my original engine. Rear rotor. My conclusion was apex seal was cracked in a couple places and eventually the pieces worked their way out and it failed instantly. It still started and ran on one rotor. I drove it about a mile to a safe please before I shut it off. Now I'm in a reman.....so seeing this makes me nervous.

A $2,500 budget for a rebuild on that one could work, but only depending on how much you guys will charge him for labor, LOL.

if I were him on his "2500 budget"

I will get a Mazda reman from Mazda, return this PoS core back to them as core charge, get the Reman and tear it down and rebuild it completely.

Remans come with New Rotor housings and all soft seals should be new, probably Apex too.

hell I will probably do this when the day comes (or not, just for fun) who knows.
